Jeal / Jewiss / Lanceley Look Up please
« on: Tuesday 31 May 11 23:14 BST (UK) »
Hi, I would like to trace a family who lived in a cottage next to the Brewery Tap Public House on Lakedale Lane Plumstead between the years 1885 and 1895.

I am trying to trace a couple who are featured in a lovely photo I have with the following text written on the back

"this photo is my mother's aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Jeal.  They lived in a cottage by the "Brewery Tap" in Lakedale Road, Plumstead.  I used to go and see them and meet my mother there when I came from school and we would walk home together.  My mother died suddenly of a heart attach when I was 13.  I was in the Ex 7th and left school then.  My sisters, Dolly then 17 and Kate 15 were mother's helps."

The lady who wrote this was Lizzie Heasman and she would have started school in approx 1887 and her mother died 1895.

I'm not sure how hard it would be to trace this couple on the electoral role or some other such record - I've tried all the usual census etc but I cannot pin the couple down.

I believe it is possible that Lizzie got their surname wrong and it was Jewis (married name of her mother's aunt).

I would dearly love to put this mystery to bed .

Many thanks,

Loulou 330

Hi Loulou

Do you have the name of the mother's aunt and her date/place of birth which should help to track her in the census?  If not, what information do you have about her?

Hi Rog,

This is fantastic

I'd got the 1901 detail but not the exact location.  Is the Brewery Tap actually mentioned on Elizabeth's page, because if it  is I've been incredibly thick!!!!

Do you have local knowledge of Plumstead?

my email is email address removed by moderator - please use the secure Rootschat personal message system to exchange email addresses thankyou

Many thanks for you help on this.

Hi Casalguidi

Unfortunately that's the problem I've only got the info on the back of the photo to go on - except that one of her Aunt's names was Elizabeth.

It looks as though Rog has been able to solve the mystery - as Elizabeth Jewiss' name has come up as a couple of doors away from the Brewery Tap - a little detail I'd completely missed.

Many thanks,

Hi Rog,

Thanks so much for your help - I agree, the amount of ways to speak Jeal and Jewiss is unbelievable.

Thanks again,

Loulou

Dear Loulou,

I cannot remember if I have replied to this message before because I rarely use this website, but I have just taken up researching some of my earlier relatives.
My HEAD family appeared in Plumstead at the turn of the 18th/19th centuries and the subsequent family was large, all living in Plumstead and Woolwich. One of the first children to be born of John Head and Sophia Smith was William E Head. (John was a gunner in the navy, having been in the Southampton militia and having been taken on board ship bound for the West Indies during the Napoleonic Wars - he ended up at Woolwich Barracks!) I can find little reference to him apart from a highly possible (second) marriage to a Henrietta Jeal in Orpington, Kent on 5 June 1842, Henrietta was the daughter of Edward Jeal of Orpington. William's father is noted as John, which makes this a real possibility. I found another family JEAL living in Plumstead around the same time, so it is possible that this is family - cousins, perhaps, of Henrietta.
The Brewery Tap pub was just at the bottom of Lakedale Road, where my father's family all lived, and John Head started out living up the hill on the common. it is quite possible, therefore, that the HEADs and the JEALs met each other socially. I have pasted my research for you below - I hope it is useful!
