1841 /1851 census lookup please. Crossgate Cupar Fife
« on: Saturday 30 April 05 14:24 BST (UK) »
Would anyone be able to lookup a family of Robertsons in Crossgate? Robert Robertson was a jeweller /watchmaker. His wife was Isabella [Jessie]
Children were Robert, John Alexander, John, Stewart Alexander, Elizabeth, William, and George brunston. I would be very grateful. Cheers Pam :o

The 1841 Census for Cupar and some other parishes was apparantly lost at sea.

I found the following on Ancestry for the 1851 Census:-

Head Robert Robertson
Age: 55
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1796
Relationship: Head
Spouse's Name: Jesse J
Gender: Male
Where born: Cupar, Fife
Parish Number: 420
Civil Parish: Cupar
County: Fife
Address: 29 Lebanon
Occupation: Goldsmith 2 Inspeet Of Weeglet Acres Meaunt Wife

Wife Jesse J Robertson 55 born Dunkeld
Son William Robertson 20 Engineer born Cuar
Son George Robertson 14 Galannith Ap born Cupar
Daughter Elizabeth Robertson 23 born Cupar

As usual the transcription on Ancestry leaves a lot to be desired. I do not know what else Robert may have done apart from Goldsmith. I presume son George was a Goldsmith Apprentice.

According to googlemaps Front Lebanon and Back Lebanon are streets north of Bonnygate Cupar.

Hope this helps.

Hi Ian. THank you for that census. Yes Georeg was a jeweller as well. I think the occupation should say Inspector of Weights and measures. I can now see that William was an engineer. Elizabeth also ended up as a jeweller.
Cheers ;D

I have a family of  Jewellers/Watchmakers in my family tree. The business was  in Kirkcaldy but started by a man from Cupar. I found details of the history of the business in a book entitled "Fife Shopkeepers and Traders 1820-1870".

On a trip to Fife last year I saw the book at Cupar Library and I think they have it at Kirkcaldy Library as well. If you have not already done so it might be worth a look for the Robertsons.

Hi Margow. Thank you. I am surprised there is some stuff still around. Robert Robertson was also apparently involed in something called nobby`s law. I have found this on the internet when googling robert robertson. ;D
I think he was known about the place back then
