« on: Thursday 21 July 11 16:31 BST (UK) »
Dear members,

Trying to see if Rachel Maria Charles married John Baird in 1854 in Kent.

Rachel M Charles was the daughter of Deskfoord Charles and Elizabeth Simmons. Rachel used to live in Wellington Cottage, Gillingham, Kent.

Kind regards

Hi Steve, was Rachel married prior to John Baird, or is the 1861 the incorrect Rachel? ie this 1871 census:-

John Baird 61? b Surrey

John W 16 b Kent
Arthur O 5 b Kent
Edwin W BRIGGS 43 Wifes Brother b Kent
Residing at Deskfoord Cottage, Gillingham, Kent

From what I can see http://www.familysearch.org Rachael Maria was a BRIGGS.  Rachael Maria BRIGGS bp Chatham 1824 daughter of Benjamin and Ann BRIGGS thus sister to Edwin William BRIGGS.  Rachael appears to have married Deskford George CHARLES ie. Deskford George CHARLES baptised 1849 Gillingham son of Deskford George and Rachael Maria CHARLES.

1851 New Fishbourne, Sussex

Benjamin BRIGGS head mar 51 rail?? road gate keeper b.High.............. Kent

Hi again, I think Lindsay L on the 1861 at Willington/Wellington Cottage on the 1861 census is Lilian as here are possibles in 1871 and 1881:-

1871 Census
Lillilla Baird 12
Florence 9
Both shown as Boarders/ Scholars at Academy, Brompton House, River Row
Chatham, Kent
Census Ref RG10/909/4/1
1881 Census
John Baird 71 Victualler b Horsham Sussex
Rachel M 50 b Chatham
Lilian R 22 b Gillingham
Florence 19 b Gillingham
Residing at 19, The Two Sawyers, High Street, Gillingham, Kent
Census Ref RG11/892/106/21
So once again is this Rachel Maria Charles?

Dear members,

Many thanks for your splendid effort. I have a bout 90% of the information you have supplied. It may seem complicated with two Rachel Maria's on the scene and even three Deskfoord Charles but I have this situation well and truly under control. My task is to find when/where Rachel Maria Charles married John Baird. I know RACHEL & JOHN appear in the same BMD group of names ref. 2a 295 1854 Mar Qtr but it would be nice and correct to have a marriage date. I hope that Rachel did marry John. This couple had some kids. After 25 years of research I may yet find a living but distant relative in the UK :-)

Kind regards to all
Steve

Well I'm sorry Steve but the Rachael Maria CHARLES who married John BAIRD was a widow and the daughter of Benjamin BRIGGS when she married John BAIRD 7 Jan 1854 at Brompton
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0edq/

Rachael was previously married to Deskefoord George CHARLES in the March quarter of 1841 Milton registration district as mentioned in my post above.

Are you sure Deskford Charles and Elizabeth SIMMONS had a daughter Rachael Maria and that a daughter in law isn't getting confused with a daughter somewhere along the way?  May we ask the source of your information that Deskford and Elizabeth had a daughter names Rachael Maria?

1841 census Wellington Cottage, Gillingham

Deskford CHARLES 70 Army R b.Scotland
Mary 50 b.Kent
Deskford 30 Navy H P b.Kent
Rachael 19 b.Kent
George 25 Navy H P b.Scotland

HO107/458 book 1 folio 60 page 23

No relationships are given in the 1841 census so Rachael could well be daughter in law unless you have other information that suggests otherwise.

If you are looking for living relatives, what about the son of Deskford George CHARLES and Rachael Maria BRIGGS born 1849 - have you traced him forward?

Deskford George CHARLES age 26 of Toronto, born Canterbury Kent, bachelor, civil engineer son of Deskford George and Rachel Maria CHARLES (maiden names of mother aren't given in the register) married Kate Julia Jane HATCHARD at Toronto, Canada 22 Jul 1876.
