The Heaths of Guildford
« on: Sunday 14 August 11 21:42 BST (UK) »
I am interested in tracing the line of my maternal grandfather, Richard Heath who died in WW1. I have traced the Heath family from Farnborough and Aldershot, Hampshire to Guildford and Godalming in  Surrey. George heath was born in 1838 in Guilford. He married a Augusta Harriett T? who was born in Godalming in 1838. in 1861. George's parents were George Heath and Charlotte? They were both born in Guildford in 1812 and 1835, respectively. I'd appreciate any help  to learn more about the Heath family in Surrey. Thanks. David

If George was born in 1838 - Charlotte could not have been born in 1835

Per freebmd and the GRO index - her surname was Tunmer.  Here is the marriage - 2 different dates given on the IGI

Where did you get his parents names from?  In 1851 he is living with his widowed aunt Mary Boucher b 1804

In 1841 - Mary Boucher was living with Charles Heath aged 60 - she was possibly his daughter

On both occasions - it was in the Civil Parish of Holy Trinity

There is a George Heath aged 3 in 1841 also living in Holy Trinity but parents are George & Harriet

Hi

1861 census RG9 428 folio 69

Charlotte Heath 26 Wife Married Guildford Surrey
George Heath 23 Son Printer Guildford Surrey
Harriet Heath 13 Daughter Guildford Surrey
James Heath 11 Son Guildford Surrey

Harriett Heath 32 Wife Married Laundress Lewes Sussex
John Heath 8 Son Guildford Surrey
Harriett Heath 2 Daughter Guildford Surrey
James Heath 8 months Son Guildford Surrey

Possible marriage (one of the children's birth certificates would prove it as they would have their mother's maiden name)

GEO HEATH
HARRIET KITCHERNER
Marriage:  02 OCT 1836   Stoke Next Guildford, Surrey

Possible death registration but the age does not quite match the 1851 census (taken from a burial index not the actual burial register)

Deaths Dec 1853
Heath  Harriet    Guildford  2a 28

Buried 25th October 1853 Holy Trinity Guildford
Harriet Heath aged 31?

The IGI/Family Search has two possible baptisms for George Heaths in Guildford.

GEO HEATH
Christening:  08 JUL 1810   Holy Trinity, Guildford, Surrey
Father:  CHAS HEATH

GEO HEATH
Christening:  30 JUN 1811   Holy Trinity, Guildford, Surrey
Father:  GEO HEATH

George's second marriage will give the details of his father (and confirm whether it was Charles) but there does not seem to be any children, or any that survived for this marriage to help establish Charlotte's maiden name.

The Lambeth marriage in 1858 is of a George Heath widower but his occupation is a tailor, though his father was called Charles.

Charles Heath had a daughter called Mary.

MARY HEATH
Christening:  03 SEP 1802   Holy Trinity, Guildford, Surrey
Father:  CHAS HEATH

MARY HEATH
CHARLES BOUCHER
Marriage:  11 SEP 1827   Saint Anne Soho, Westminster, London

Charles Heath of Guildford, slopseller, left a will dated 1845 and proved 1845 in Surrey Archdeaconry Court.

He mentions his sons James, William and George Heath, and daughters Mary Boucher, Ann Willis and Sarah Heath.

I now have information that I think solves the problem of two George Heaths being born about the same time in the same place, Guildford. Thanks to bjmayes, valda and caroleW. These two Georges are distinguished by the name of their father, either George or Charles. The clue appears to be in the one document i have, the birth certificate of the son, also called George He was born in 1838 in Guildford. His parents were listed as George Heath and Harriet Kircherner. The important information is that the father was listed as a tailor. Valda found information of George's second marriage in 1858 to presumably Charlotte? in Lambeth, Surrey (which i assume is near Guilford). George was listed as a widower and a tailor. His father was listed as Charles Heath (and not George). Valda also found that Charles heath had a daughter Mary, who later married a Charles Boucher in Westminister in 1827. She was born in 1802. bdmayes found that the will of Charles Heath, who died in 1845, had a son George and a daughter mary Boucher. In the 1841 census, Mary Boucher was living with her father Charles. He was 60, putting his birth around 1781. It would be nice to go back further. I wonder what the origin of the Boucher name is. One mystery remains. George, the son, was missing from the Heath household in the 1851 census. He would have been 13. He was present in the 1841 and 1861 censuses. Once again, thank you all for your kind contributions. Any comments or suggestions would be welcomed. Best wishes David

Hi

Carole has already given you the information from the 1851 census.

'In 1851 he is living with his widowed aunt Mary Boucher b 1804'

He was certainly there on census night - one night in 10 years isn't enough evidence that he consistently lived with her though.

Lambeth is now in central London - south of the river Thames. Guildford and Lambeth are just under 30 miles apart.

10th January 1858 St Barnabas South Lambeth

George Heath Full Age Widower Tailor 18 Walter Street Charles Heath Clothier
Charlotte Keene Full Age Spinster 18 Walter Street George Keene
Both signed
Witnesses Charles and Sarah Ann Birt

On the 1841 census Charles Heath's occupation was given as a clothier. He was living a few households away from George Heath senior and his family.
