Mary Hicks, death 1881 - 1891 Bexley Heath
« on: Sunday 21 August 11 15:51 BST (UK) »
I am looking for the death of Mary Hicks, born 1809, who was registered in Bexley Heath in 1881.
Her husband, Thomas, now a widower, was living with his son Edwin & family in Aldershot, Southampton. So she might have died in either place. She was a Catholic, which might help in the search.
Thank you to anyone who has a look for me! ;)

Use http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/ and enter her name and 1881-1891 and check out any of them of about the right age.

That's all any of us can do  :D

Her being a Catholic would only help if you have access to Catholic burial records.  Wherever and whenever she died she should be in the death indexes on Freebmd.

You might find a Will and/or an obituary in the local paper.

Hi  - I presume you mean that she was living Bexley Heath in the 1881 census and that her husband was a widower by1891?

There are a lot of Mary Hicks who died between these dates, so as the others said it is just a matter of working your way through them on freebmd and eliminating. It will be easier as you know her date of birth as ages at death are given.

Good luck

:) Thank you all for your input. I had tried this avenue before, and found no-one that really fitted the bill. I was hoping for a bit of magic! Back to the drawing board.

IF you have any idea of which Catholic church she would have been buried at,or what date her hubby died, perhaps you could check out his grave and see if she's in there too.

The usual method would be to locate her death cert first though  ;D

The 1891 census where Thomas is living with his son Edwin and is aged 81 doesn't actually state that he's widowed.I see in 1881 that they have a son Arthur b Gravesend, aged 30 who is listed as an imbecilie. Can't see him in 1891- had he died,or is mum somwehere else looking after him?

Hi, it's a very long time since this post was started, but I have only just found it. I hope my input s of some use, nevertheless.
Mary Hicks was my great grandmother. She was born Mary Golding, in Andover, Hants, in 1809. Her parents were William Golding and Sarah Brooks. She married Thomas Hicks at St James's, Westminster, Picadilly, in 1833. I, too, have no date for her death.
You found Thomas in 1881, living as you say with his son Edwin (my grandfather). He died in 1892, in West Ham. The family were living in Windsor Rd, Forest Gate, West Ham, at this time. Edwin's wife Jane died there the following year.
St Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in West Ham seems to have been their church, and I know that Edwin was buried in St Patrick's Catholic Cemetery, Leytonstone, so maybe this woud be a good place to look for Mary, working on the theory that she and Thomas moved in with Edwin some time between 1871 and 1881 and that she died after the move. I should have thought of looking here earlier myself!
Please, if this reaches you, will you let me know if your research was ultimately successful?
