Groton House, Suffolk
« on: Friday 21 October 11 16:00 BST (UK) »
I came across a message from 'cornsilk' dated 29/12/2007 re Groton House.  Might be able to help cornsilk or anybody else interested: I had been trying to find the House as part of my interest in my family tree and I have a 'Visitors' book entitled 'Groton House' with entries starting in 1887, last entry in 1898. The book belonged to a relative on my Mother's side of the family.

Welcome!

From the 1855 Whites Gazetteer.

"Groton House is the seat of Sir HC Blake, Bart., whose family were formerly seated at Langham, and one of whom was created a Baronet in 1772."

That's it I'm afraid.  I also checked Pevsner who surveyed Suffolk in 1961 but it isn't mentioned.

Rick :)

This is Groton Place (I think) rather than Groton House   :-\

http://www.doggettfam.org/doggetthouse.htm

I used to cycle past everytime I took news from our village for the parish magazine (we are a five parish benefice).

As far as I know it is divided into three homes now.

However, to get the correct house (and there are a few large houses scattered around the parish) I will PM details of the Local History Recorder for Groton who will no doubt be able to supply a photograph too.

Thanks to Suffolkmawther and Rick for their input.  I keep investigating but from the little knowledge I have I believe that a Mrs James Aspinall (and presumably family!) lived at Groton House some time between 1887 and 1897............gennysh

The Times, Tue, December 5th, 1893 reported the wedding of Ethel Ruby Buckley Aspinall youngest adopted daughter of James P Aspinall, Esq, of Croton House, Boxford and 2 Cleveland Sq W.

By July 1897 the Groton House estate is up for sale.

In Feb 1899 the Times has a report re. the sale of the estate and the "late James Perronet Aspinall". His widow is Emily Agnes Aspinall.
