Jeremiah Kerrisk and Johanna O'Mara
« on: Tuesday 08 November 11 07:36 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for information on Jeremiah Kerrisk and Johanna O'Mara. I believe they lived around Farranfore, Kerry.  They would have been married around 1850.  One son John came to Australia on the "Sepia" 18 June 1875.  John's marriage certificate gives his parents names as Jeremiah and Johanna, Killarney.  Have not been able to find any record of them in Ireland.  Any help would be appreciated.

Do you know what denomination your Kerrisk and O'Mara families were ?

Their marriage looks to have been before the start of full civil records, so you may have to check for church records. Many for Co. Kerry (RC and Church of Ireland) are available free on www.irishgenealogy.ie

see : Introduction to Irish Records

Hi Shane
They were Roman Catholic.  I have searched quite a few of the Catholic parishes without any luck.  I will look through these sites you have suggested.
Thanks Molie

As far as I can see Faranfore was in the RC parish of Molahiff. Baptism and marriage records for this parish go back to 1830, but according to the National Library Index early records (pre 1870) are in very poor condition, so it's possible that sections can not be deciphered..

The parish is sometimes listed as 'Molahiff & Aglis (Firies)' and included on the Irish Genealogy website as Firies.

see : Molahiff RC parish, Kerry (Irish Times)

Thanks for the help Shane.  I have found the family in Dromore near Farranfore.  Jeremiah Kerrisk and Johanna Mara are listed as the parents of:
Edmund   17 Dec 1854
Mary  26 March 1858
Patrick  28 April 1861
Johanna  4 Oct 1868
Catherine  30 July 1871
Honora  20 Feb 1865
Timothy  11 Nov 1862

However I was really looking for my g grandfather John DOB 1 Sept 1857.  His marriage certificates (he was married twice) state his parents as Jeremiah and Johanna.  What happened to that record?  Any ideas where I should look would be great.  I would love to find where John Kerrisk came from in Ireland

Based on the baptisms you found it looks like the family were probably in the same area during the timeframe that John was born, so possibly his baptism wasn't recorded or is in the parts the register that are damaged.

It's worth trying variations in spelling for the names, and also in Latin - often used for Christian names in RC records.

You could try searching the neighbouring parishes to see if maybe the family moved for a time - or lived near a parish boundary, however not all the adjacent parishes have records back far enough. See the Co. Kerry RC parish map on the Irish Times website : Co. Kerry RC Parishes

Searching by date through the records for Firies parishes show some baptisms during September - but no sign of anything for that looks like Kerrisk - see : Sept. 1857, Baptisms

You can view the actual registers for some parishes on IrishGenealogy to check the condition of the pages, but this option is not available for Firies parish at present.

....
Mary  26 March 1858
...
g grandfather John DOB 1 Sept 1857.
...

just looking at the dates a bit closer - is the September 1857 date of birth possible for John ?

Mary appears to have been born only about 6 months later ..
