charles Lamb b1873
« on: Sunday 27 November 11 15:24 GMT (UK) »
Hello, earlier this year I received help from this site to determine the parents of above, he says on his marriage cert and on 1891 census that he was born in Eastbourne but no records have been found. Tracing back from his two marriages ,(first to Caroline Thrower in 1903 and second to Emily Cranwell in 1908) his father appears to be William Lamb and mother could be Grace ? (last of three spouses)  and from 1881 census  it states that he was born in Tonbridge. I have just received a copy of a birth cert 1874 Tonbridge 2a-574 for Charles w. Lamb but it is not my relative. My request is can anyone find any evidence of a birth in Tonbridge?? or advise any other lines of enquiry ? Thanks in advance, Elia

Hi

It is quite likely that his birth was not registered.  It was the late 1870's when registration was 'tightened up'   prior to that it can be hit and miss.

Marriage certificates don't give place of birth just residence at time of marriage.

Sorry if this has already been done before:
1903 marriage address - 18 Grace Street Bromley St L

1901
18 Grace Street

William J Gerlett 49 yrs House Decorator b Highgate West
Caroline 45 yrs b Essex Dunmow
Charlotte Lamb boarder widow 62 yrs Factory Hand b Scotland

There is no other Charlotte Lamb b Scotland in censuses  :-\
I wonder if she is Grace?

Also not sure if it is Gerlett but that is the transcription - looks like Yerlett.

It is Yerlett and Caroline was C Barrack so no connection
