Photographers...anyone know any of these??!
« on: Monday 02 January 12 16:00 GMT (UK) »
My great grandmother and her adoptive mother ran a boarding house on the IOM in the early 1900s. We have some photos in the family and did think some of them were relatives but now we're not so sure! I would be interested in any information about the photographers themselves. I was going to try to upload some of the photos but at the moment all the images are too large and I can't seem to shrink them. However the photographers' details are:

C.B. Bradshaw, ?. Finch, Pierrot Village, Douglas

Harrison and Co. Patronised by H.M. King, Holly Bank Studio, Onchan

Gelling Bros. Queens Promenade, Douglas

Thank you  :)

Smith; Dutton; Sawyer; Judd; Taylor; Haddock; Viney; Kemp; Edwards

Some are on my photographers page www.manxnotebook.com/tourism/pgrphrs/pgrhrs.htm - I'd be interested in the adverts on back as these often help date photos - Gelling is a new one to my list

Hello again Frances_mnb....sorry, seem to be keeping you busy this afternoon with my IOM posts!

The photos are back with my mum at the moment but I'll give her a call tonight and ask her to give me all info she can.

I think I have just managed to shrink some of the images so I'll try to attach them.  There are more but I scanned them a while ago and didn't think to keep the logo visible on all of them!

The clown one is the one that says Bradshaw on it and the organ one is the Gelling Bros one. Just in case the names don't show up.

Hi Frances, I will email you the photo and will see what information Mum can give me tonight. I have another photo as well which has a man with an impressive moustache that we used to think was the same chap but are far less certain these days having given it a good look.

I've just been looking up the Gelling Brothers on 19th Century Newspapers online and have found reference to the Brothers gelling doing very well at football and sailing! No idea if they are the same ones though.

I await it - Gelling is a common manx name - main company were iron founders but quite a number of other families only related back prior to records

OK, I have the info from my Mum but it's rather sparse, no adverts I'm afraid.

Organ Photo: Nothing on the back except 'Mr Holmes' written by my grandfather apparently in the mistaken belief that Esther Hannah Taylor's maiden name was Holmes....which it wasn't, it was Hulley. Unless there is a Mr Holmes who was an organ player / maker on IOM

Younger Mandolin playing woman and older woman with fan - nothing on the back , totally blank

Large Clown photo (it's A4 sized roughly) nothing on the back. Full writing from the front says:
L. B. Bradshaw
6 Finch Road & Pierrot Villiage

There is an additional photo that I don't have a copy of that is of a little boy standing on a chair wearing a dress and with a little hat on and it apparently says on the back:

Walter Lesley Phillips
29 Prospect Hill
Douglas
Class 2
Date: 24.04.24
Sender (Mother) Agnes Phillips
Photographed by Newley (?) 18 Prospect Hill Douglas

This is more of a postcard really.

The Moustached man with his family was actually a photo taken in Manchester, I hadn't realised.

So not much more to go on. The 1924 postcard must have been sent to my great grandmother as she was living back in Manchester by then, or possibly even Wales as she married in 1915 to a Thomas Edwards and they moved to Wales at some point I think....if my memory isn't failing me!

Thanks again for you help!
