James Phillips b 1800 Llanfallteg, lived Crinow
« on: Monday 23 January 12 17:19 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

My ggggrandfather, James Phillips is shown on the 1851 census as a cooper living in Crinow and born in Llanfallteg.

I'm trying to find out more on this Phillips line and the LLanfallteg connection.

On the 1841 Crinow census a Paul Philipps appears (James is also spelled the same way), he is also noted as a cooper, so I imagine he may be James' father.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Hello  :)

The occupation is a possible clue, but it could be a different relationship  :-\

Not sure whether it's your James, but there is a will on the National Library of Wales site, James Philipps, 1857, naming his wife Ann.

http://hdl.handle.net/10107/491922

Do you have a birth certificate for one of the children, to provide Ann's maiden name? The marriage would have been pre-1837, and could have taken place in Crinow, Llanfallteg, or Tenby where Ann was born.

Modified - they were at Green Castle, Crinow in 1841, with children Harriet, Thomas, and Benjamin.

James Phillips is shown on the 1851 census as a cooper living in Crinow and born in Llanfallteg.................Paul Philipps appears (James is also spelled the same way), he is also noted as a cooper............

Paul Phillip mrd Anne Phillip at Llanfalteg in 1799, however this does not on the face of it appear to equate to the Paul & Phebe of Crinow in 1841 census.

The answer may be in the following ;
Paul Phillips a widower of Crinow mrd Phebe Morris at Robeston Wathen on the 06th Nov 1818.

I note that a James Phillipps a Cooper married Anne Vickers at Crinow on the 02 Nov 1832

The will of William Philipp of Crinow reference SD1758-001 may be related to your research, however he does not mention any Philipps as beneficiaries.

I have been unable to locate any early reference to the Vickers surname in or around the area of your interest which would appear to suggest the family are incomers to the area. I have found the mrge of George Jenkins to Harriet Vickers at Narberth 19 Jul 1831

From my database of Burgess of Pembroke Borough 1678 to 2008 I note ;
Walter Phillips an Auctioneer of Llanvalteg (Llanfalteg) was made burgess 28 Oct 1811 Admin Bk 12 Page 177 Minute Bk page 344
Thomas Phillip a Weaver of Llanvalteg was made burgess 18 May 1795 Admin Bk 7 Page 234 Minute Bk page 357
Johh Phillips a Cooper was made burgess 06 Jan 1766 Admin Bk 4 Page 04 Minute Bk page 11
Thomas Phillips a Cooper of Masgwynne was made burgess 28 Oct 1811 Admin Bk 12 Page 70 Minute book 324
John Phillips a Cooper was made burgess 10 Jan 1774 Admin Bk 4 Page 65 Minute Bk page 45

morganllan and Orielbenfro,

Many thanks for your quick responses.

The James P you mention is the man whose parents I am trying to trace.

There are some amazing family trees around that explain the Vickers line, Anne's father was a blacksmith from Staffordshire who moved to Tenby where Anne was born, before he returned to the Midlands. The trees show the Vickers line to the 1660's in Staffordshire.

How can I set about tracing the parents of JP, born around 1800 in Llanfallteg (1851 census)? I do not have a marriage certificate until a couple of generations later.

The 1799 marriage of Paul Phillips does seem interesting, especially if he is the same PP who remarried in 1818, so Anne could be JP's mother.

Thanks again.

There are no mrge certificates pre Sept 1837 only mrge entries in Parish Registers. Do not confuse Baptism/Mrge/Burial with Birth Mrge & Death. Parents names are not shown in mrge entries pre 1837 but sometimes a hint can be gained from the mrge witnesses.

I will have a quick check of Llanfallteg baptism register for circa 1800 for a James Phillips (various spellings) on your behalf on my next R.O. visit.

I will have a look at the witnesses to the mrge of James & Anne in 1832 to see if “Dad” was one of the witnesses at the time.

Orielbenfro,

Many thanks for your offer of help.
I look forward to what you may find.

Are they a helpful lot at the RO, if you do not have much experience of research?

Regards,
