Ok, I've receive a quote from the National Archives for Charles' Naturalisation case papers. 114 pages for £50.

Can anyone tell me what I expect to find out from 'case papers' before I pay out?

I've asked if it will be any cheaper if I attend in person at Kew.

Marc

Hi Marc,

I received 21 pages on my ancestors' naturalisation record.

1 was a cover sheet with the cost of my Ancestors application (£9);

2 pages were his biography;

Some pages were his proof of handwriting so that he could prove that he could read and write English well;

A few pages were proof that he had advertised his intention of becoming a naturalised British Citizen in the press on at least 2 occassions, in case anybody was against it;

other pages were sworn statements by 4 independent witnesses to attest that they knew him well enough to vouch for him,

The rest is basic summarising of the previous pages.

114 pages seems like a lot more info than what was on mine.

Thanks,

Darin.

Thanks Darin.

I've asked what is covered by the 114 pages. Maybe I can cut it down! They are charging 45p a sheet.

My cousin "bought" the naturalisation papers of her grandfather, also over 100 pages.

Many were in polish and needed translating, and some pages were results of researches which led to naturalisation not being granted.

It is very hard to say beforehand what will be in the papers, but there are some other experiences described  here:

It's been a while since I posted on this subject, but I've recently discovered 2 of my ancestors Hebrew names. This may help other people help me!

Simon Brenner was Nachman Ben Katriel
b. 1847, Poland
d. 1916, Islington, UK
m (1865)

Fanny Solomans was Freda Bat Hillel
b. 1848, Poland
d. 1919, London

I've already got various census data from Ancestry. I also have details of their burials.

I've managed to find more detail on the other side of my Jewish roots, but this one stops at Poland. It would be nice to know the town at least.

If you can assist, please get in touch.

Thanks

Marc

Hello -

The sister of my great grandmother married a Russian Jew and I found Stuart Rosenblatt's website -http://www.irishjewishroots.com - very useful.

Hello Marc,

What is the source of their Hebrew names? Their gravestones perhaps?

I'm just a bit surprised that a man with the Hebrew name Nachman chose to be called Simon in English.

If the Hebrew name is correct, then it looks like he came from a place called Koło in the governorate of Kalisz, midway between Warsaw and Poznan.

Also, how have you determined that your Cohen ancestors came from Starovsk (a town I cannot place)?

Justin

I paid less than £20 for the  alien registration document  for my ggfather from Glamorgan records office + it had his emigration date , exact birth , all addresses from 1916-1920   and ...a photo ..

Were  such certificates only in GB because of WW1

re names i wonder if some people just chose random english names rather than following conventional traditions ;

Ggfather's brother has turned up with 1st names  Jacob B . Barius . Benjamman J,Barnett. Barnard  +
one sister starts as Sore, becomes Sarah by the time the family is established in USA she is Celia
Not to mention Khaya  to Rebecca ,then Tilly matilda + back to Tillie    so using 1st initials on searches won't always find the right person .
I'd never have found the Latvian connections without justin's invaluable help
 Good luck in your search
