Any idea where this is?
« on: Sunday 29 April 12 11:39 BST (UK) »
I have a note on a marriage and am trying to identify this person.

John WILDMAN of Tyler or Tiler married 1795 Thurleigh to Mary AUSTIN

Any idea where Tyler or Tiler may have been.
It is possible that John Wildman may have come from the Finedon area of Northants. Also there may be a variation on the name of Wildman to Willman.

John and Mary had children baptised in Thurleigh, Beds
Ann 1807, Mary 1813, Abigail 1815, Ahinoam 1817, Kerenhappach 1819, Kezia 1819, John 1822

Any help would be appreciated.

.

This John was born Thurleigh according to the 1851 census.

The IGI marriage gives Tyler or Tiler as alternative surnames in other words he could have been illegitimate.

IGI extracted record for his christening - 8th July 1871 - Thurleigh- father Edward Wildman, mother Mary

Thank you for the information and putting me 'straight'.

I have a puzzle trying to find out how John and his daughter Ann (later PICKERING) born 1804 in Thurleigh were related to the THURLEY and TRUEMAN family.  Following through the census etc I found.

Ann WILDMAN bapt 10 Jan 1807 Thurleigh Beds f=John m=Mary
Ann Wildman married in Thurleigh 1829 to John PICKERING.
Ann PICKERING witnessed the marriage in Biddenham of Abraham THURLEY to Elizabeth TRUEMAN
Ann Pickering is with Trueman children on the census and seems to feature significantly.

Abraham's THURLEY mother was married as Elizabeth WILLMAN  but she was
Elizabeth WILMAR born 26 Nov 1787 Bapt 24 Dec 1787 f=John m=Mary. Finedon C of E BT Entry

So I thought John WILDMAN may have been either the father or brother of Elizabeth. If he was born 1871 then he would be too young to be Elizabeth WILLMAN born 1787 father. If John’s father was Edward and Elizabeth’s father was John then he cannot be her brother.

Back to the drawing board! But thank you for your help.

Ann (Wildman) Pickering could have witnessed the marriage of Elizabeth Trueman as she was working in the same household as her in 1861 (William and Ann Draper's)

I haven't found out where the Tyler/Tiler bit comes in though  ::)

Hi Rosie
Good thought but
1861 Ann Pickering 1804 Thurleigh aged 57 (Nurse) with Elizabeth TRUEMAN born 1841 Bedford living 3 Silver St (nx to Bull Inn) in household of William DRAPER Clothier and General Outfitter. Widower and 9 children,

Elizabeth Trueman was aged 17 (born 1822) when she married Abraham Thurley in 1839 Biddenham

On the 1861 census Elizabeth Trueman gives her place of birth as Bedford in 1841 (2 years before the marriage). There were no Truemans (to my knowledge) in Thurleigh. I believe this Elizabeth was baptised Elizabeth TRUEMAN bap 8 Nov 1840 f=Timothy m=Mary Bedford St Paul and was Elizabeth TRUEMAN 1822 niece.

To confuse things (I said it was a puzzle) also on the 1851 census is (sorry I originally said 1861)
Ann PICKERING born 1806 Sharnbrook a visitor of Robert and Mary SMITH 1811 Bedford nee THURLEY St John Str Bedford. Mary 1811 was Abraham’s sister
Both Mary SMITH and Abraham THURLEY were the children of John THURLEY and Elizabeth WILLMAN

Hi John (and David)
Thank you for the link. I read through the pages but do not think that at this stage they answer my questions. I have gone over my notes and I think perhaps there were two Ann Pickerings involved and that one may have remained unmarried.  I may have gone horrible wrong but this what I think;

When Abraham THURLEY married Elizabeth TRUEMAN in 1839 in Biddenham the witness were; William TRUEMAN (Elizabeth’s eldest brother as head of the family their father died in 1833) and Ann PICKERING who I am sure was significant to this family in a small village with many other family members who could have been witnesses.
Who was Ann PICKERING and was she related to the Trueman or Thurley families?

My two candidates are.

1. Ann PICKERING born 1806 Sharnbrook (Launderess no status) was a visitor of Mary SMITH nee THURLEY on 1851 census in Bedford. I have not found a baptism in Sharnbook but have seen
Ann PICKERING born 14 Jul 1807 bap 5 Mar 1837 Oakley Beds f =John m=Susanna C00374-2.

2. Ann PICKERING born 1804 Thurleigh (Nurse) is with Elizabeth TRUEMAN born 1841 in Bedford on 1861 census. On other census Ann is married with her husband John.
Possibly Ann WILDMAN who married John PICKERING in 1829 in Thurleigh Beds.
Ann WILDMAN bapt 10 Jan 1807 Thurleigh Beds, f=John m=Mary

From the census
1. 1841 Ann Pickering born 1811 Beds with Joseph 1790 & Elizabeth 1785 KILPIN, George Morton, Robert Crooks living St Johns Str Bedford St Mary (bad image I cannot see her occupation)
1. 1851 Ann PICKERING born 1806 Sharnbrook (no matital status - Launderess) was a visitor of Robert and Mary SMITH (nee THURLEY Abraham’s sister) born 1811 Bedford living St John Str Bedford.
Could not find Ann 1. on later census

2. 1841 Ann Pickering born 1811 Beds wife of John 1801 (Agr Lab) children, Ann 1828, Henry 1830, Susan 1836, Trufena 1838, Ruth 1840 living Green, Clapham
2. 1851 Ann Pickering 1804 Thurleigh Beds wife of John 1800 Clapham children, Ruth 1841, Joshua 1842, Amos 1848 living Green Clapham Beds.

1861 Ann is not with husband John Pickering 1798 Clapham (Marr Ar Lab) who is with their son Amos 1848 living Green, Clapham
1861 Ann Pickering born 1804 Thurleigh aged 57 (Nurse) (transcribed as widow on FindMyPast but looks like Married to me) with Elizabeth TRUEMAN born 1841 Bedford living 3 Silver St in household of William DRAPER.

1871 & 1881 Ann Pickering born 1805 or 1861 Thurleigh (Nurse or Lacemaker) is living The Green Clapham

Elizabeth TRUEMAN born 1841 was the daughter of Timothy TRUEMAN and Mary SHARMAN and the niece of Elizabeth TRUEMAN the wife of Abraham THURLEY
Both Mary SMITH and Abraham THURLEY were the children of John THURLEY and Elizabeth WILLMAN
Their mother Elizabeth WILMAR born 26 Nov 1787 Bapt 24 Dec 1787 f=John m=Mary. Finedon C of E BT Entry

I have had a hunt around but am getting more and more confused. Any ideas?
