McCOLLUM, Sarah - Queensland
« on: Tuesday 01 May 12 09:29 BST (UK) »
Hello

I am trying to find out what became of my great great aunt, Sarah McCollum, born near Carnlough, County Antrim, Ireland around 1862.

I believe that she left Ireland in 1887 and travelled to Queensland via London aboard the 'Duke of Sutherland'.  I have details of two entries in the Queensland Passenger lists that indicate she passed through Townsville in December 1887 and finished in Brisbane on 3 Jan 1888.

After that I have nothing firm to go on, but family lore has it that one, she didn't return and two, that she later had a son who died in a road traffic accident.  From this I guess that she must have married in Australia and quite possibly Queensland.

Any further information would be most welcome.

Hi from Oz, Could she have used another first name? There is only one marriage QLD of a Female McCollum and her name used was MAY? The marriage was in 1890 in Country Qld so sort of fits the time frame ???
There are three in NSW dates vary but only one fits the bill and her name was CATHERINE in 1892 in Sydney.

Hello Neil and greetings from County Down!

Thanks for the reply.  The May in Queensland could be a runner, I'd say the Catherine in NSW probably isn't.

I don't have full forenames for the McCollums as all I have are the names from an old family tree hand written in the 1960s.  I'll try harder on the birth to see if I can get the name one way or t'other, before resorting to ordering a copy certificate.

The only other snippet I could offer is that sometimes the name was written as M'Collum or MacCullum.

Thanks once again

Hi again,
They had a son Dugald Colin McAllister in 1901, Boulder WA. Can't see a death for him at this stage.

Just found the death 1926, I presume the articles say. East Coolgardie. So it looks like the right Sarah.

Yes the articles say Aug 3 1926.

So it does seem like the correct Sarah - well-found Mum Mum  :)
