The 19th century Nottinghamshire tennis-playing Snooks
« on: Saturday 09 June 12 21:58 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for some basic biographical information on what were more than likely three brothers who played lawn tennis in the late 19th century, and who were probably natives of Nottingham(shire). They often took part in in what became the Nottinghamshire Championships tournament.

All I have to go on is the initials of their first two names, namely F.W. Snook, H.D. Snook and W.P. Snook. They played lawn tennis on and off in the years circa 1886-1910.

I am looking for basic information such as date and place of birth and date and place of death. Any help would be appreciated.

I'll start you off :

Frederick William Snook born Basford dist Sept Q 1864 ref 7b 115

Herbert Durrant Snook born Basford March Q 1868 ref 7b 128

Walter Percy Snook born Nottm Dec Q 1869 ref 7b 217

They were three brothers in the quite large family of James Snook and his wife Fanny.  The 1881 census ref is: piece no 3338 , folio 9 page 11.
James was born 1821 in Dorset, Fanny 1833 in Wilshire.
In that census James was described as a merchant in silks, employing 47 in a warehouse and another 57 machinists.

There will no doubt be more information that is available.

Thanks to Nottschick for the information and Nottsgirl for the private message with other information. I'm still looking for an exact date of birth and an exact date of death for Frederick William Snook, and an exact date of death and place of death for Walter Percy Snook.

If you require exact dates, you will have to buy birth and death certificates, there is no other way to get this information.  That's an expensive business at £9.25 each.   See the GRO website.
