Yes, in both 1881 and 1871 the Prince of Wales comes at the end of West Street addresses.  It is only in 1911 that it is now at the end of Coopers Lane, hence my conviction that the name changed between 1901 and 1911.
The original puzzle remains - can anyone find West Street on a map in the late 1800s, I can't (but havent seen many), whereas I can find Cooopers Lane right back to a 1790 map.

Hi
am going into the library later will try to get a look at their maps also the tithe books See what I can find Another theory is East Street is quite a lot street and the west end of it is on the crossroad where it meets coopers lane so maybe it was just known as West Street by the locals as being the west end of East Street .if you follow my drift ;D ;D

That would be good.  The maps I've looked at on line all have Coopers Lane and I would have expected the census to use the proper name (whichever it was).  Incidentally, your resident mentioned Pig Lane - some of the maps I've seen call the far end of East Street Pig Lane so I think he has possibly got east and west mixed up!  Anyway, I wish I could visit the library with you, best of luck!

Reporting the Petty Sessions at Mistley of April 29, 1929, the Chelmsford Chronicle gave one offender's address as "West Street, Dedham".

I am beginning to get the feeling that our forebears in Dedham did all this deliberately to help keep Rootschat going!  Hopefully Ronnie's trip to the library will turn up something concrete.

Hi
Been to the library. I looked at maps from 1875 1893   1905  and 1925
These were the only ones they had in large enough detail  The maps also said that the surveys were done some 3-4 years beforfe the date printed on them  Alll maps showed Coopers Lane some showed East Lane and one showed Pig lane No West anything I'm afraid
I also looked in the kellys directories again they didn't have them all and unlike Benhams they dont give addresses But I did find the following listed as Traders
1848 Mr James Double Whitmore Place Dedham  this may be of help to you
bakers at that time were charles Fitch and John Page
1866 and 1867 Gave Joseph Double as a Baker and Joseph Double jnr as a pork Butcher
1870 Joseph Double as a Baker and Emily Double as a Grocer
1878 Joseph Double  Baker
1882 Joseph Double Baker
Best I could do I'm afraid Hope it helps
Ronnie

Thank you very much for your efforts - not too hot this time!  I had some of the directory info but not all so thanks for that.
You've again confirmed that the maps we've seen don't have West Street even though what is clearly (from the names of the households) the same street is, on the censuses, called Coopers Lane in 41,51 and 61, West Street in 71, 81, 91 and 01, and then Coopers Lane again in 11.  West St then makes an appearance in 1929 and today it is Coopers Lane.  I think I'll just put it down to one of those mysteries and move on to something else!!
Thanks again for your time.  MaxD
