Does he belong to me?
« on: Sunday 19 August 12 16:30 BST (UK) »
Hello

This might be a bit vague but any thoughts will be very appreciated.

I have an Alexander Craib born 3rd Sep 1856, Kincradine O'Neill, Aberdeen, Scotland to parents John Craib and Ann Naughtey. I have Alexander in Scotland up to 1871 but not afterwards.

I believe his death might be registered in New Zealand 16th May 1905 age 48yrs. Is it possible to find if this is the same Alexander?

I have no idea when he emigrated to New Zealand or if he married at all although there is a possible marriage in 1901 to Emily Louisa Lawson and then children born to this couple. It looks like this Emily Louisa married again in 1923 to Peter Sydney Smith and then died in 1947 age 83 yrs.

As I say a bit vague but any help very much appreciated, New Zealand is a new country for research for me and I'm not sure just what information might be available.

Thank you

Bob

It may be worth trying to find George on the 1871 scottish census.could he be from the same family as Alexander?

Bob, A 1905 New Zealand death cert will contain the deceased parents names and the length of their residence here, so long as they were known to the informant. That should confirm it for you.

Hi Bob

Can see just two listings for an "Alexander CRAIB" on New Zealand electoral rolls - one in 1896;  and the other from 1905-06 through to the 1940's appears to be the (1878) New Zealand-born Alexander.

1896 - Otago -  Waitaki Roll

CRAIB - Alexander - Waihao Forks* -  Schoolmaster

[* Waihao Forks was a small community in the South Island of NZ, it's nearest largest town, Waimate, being some seven miles away. ]

Waimate (which seems a possible burial place for this Alexander) has an online cemetery database, but for some reason the website is not displaying the required information at present.
Maybe someone here with access to the burial locator might be able to check for the 1905 burial.

Otherwise could find no possible arrival date in NZ (though a passenger list entry may well have been mis-transcribed as say, "CRAIG" ?? ) ... and newspaper items yielded nothing either.

I'm guessing the 1871 Scotland census listing you have for your Alexander, perhaps doesn't show him with an occupation ?   ;D

Hi Lu,

The only one that is showing is for an Alex Craib aged 50, no death year, burial location - Kurow Cemetery, North Otago.
