Hi Andy,

Could you confirm their names again, please - I can't find their marriage registration ?

Kind regards,

Pels.

I think it should be 1894 :

Marriage, Mar qtr 1894
John William Hayes
Ada Bell
Middlesbro', Vol 9d, page 757

Andy - there are two ways to find out which church it was:

The cheapest way, if you live in Middlesbrough, is to visit the local archives and spend an hour or more checking the registers of the dozen or so churches that were in existence then, in the hope of finding the marriage. (But if it was at a register office, or a non-conformist church which didn't have its own registers so required the attendance of the registrar, you won't find it because those registers will be at the register office.)

For most people the more efficient way is to order a copy of the marriage certificate, either from the General Register Office (make sure you use the official GRO site, where it costs £9.25, not one which offers them at an inflated price), or from Middlesbrough Register Office (online indexes available at the Tees Valley Indexes website, but not online ordering) for £11.00.

Good luck,

Arthur

Addition to the above (meant to modify it but pressed wrong button):
The "dozen or so" churches were what I found in a list for Midlesbrough itself. Perhaps double that to include everywhere else in the Middlesbrough Registration District - and double the time too.

Tees Valley Indexes say the marriage reference number was :

M-201-004-0-0294

'Ecneps' has kindly typed out the list of churches and their reference numbers, forwarded to her by the Middlesbrough Register Office and posted on the link below

Just in case you wondered why I needed the registration in the first place.

OK, thanks to Pels' very useful post, you now have the name of the church. I'd still recommend either getting a certificate or looking in the actual register, because they will have more information than is in the index. If you can get to the archives to look at the registers, now you know the name of the church, that would probably take you about 10-15 minutes.

Fantastic, thanks for your help.

I had more than one relative married at St Pauls

looks like another beautiful building the council decided to pull down.

The microfilms of the parish regs are now held at Middlesbrough Reference Library, they were moved from Teesside Archives earlier this year.  You should ring and book a film reader before visiting.  01642 729001.  Facilities are basic, no refreshments or room to eat packed lunch and no toilets!  Visit MIMA (Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art) next door or the shopping centre or McDonalds over the road.
