Looking for John
« on: Saturday 28 May 05 23:32 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help
I'm looking for John Barker's birth and marriage - in censuses from 1881 to 1901 (living in Birkenhead) he states he was born in Ince in Staffordshire.  Unfortunately Ince does not exist and I can't find him in Hints which seems to be the nearest likely.  However, although he should have married ca 1874 I can't find a suitable marriage either (to his wife Mary Ann Archer from Alcester in Warwickshire), though a possible one turned up in 1887 in Birmingham with John Barker noted as widower - and it does seem likely this is the right couple.  However, I don't know where to go from here.  Anyone any suggestions. please?

Thanks Bryan
Yes I know there's an Ince near Birkenhead, but he's known (according to his grand-daughters, now deceased) to have come from the Birmingham area, not the North-West.  All I know is he came from the midlands and was born ca 1846.
However, thanks for the suggestion

Thanks to Susan and Susan for your suggestions - the trouble is, it's only John's birth I can't find - he must have met Mary Ann somewhere - perhaps I should ask someone to look through the 1871 Milverton Census entry for him - he ws also in service as a gardener and they must have met somewhere.  Thanks again.

Hi,

Can't find him in Warwickshire in 1871.  On the 1881 census his year of birth is  1857 you say he was born c 1846, I know mistakes are made in census returns, but can you be more specific as to birth year?  There are a number of John Barker's on 1871 born in Staffs. (no "Ince" I think this is probably Hints specially as the enumerator would be local to Birkenhead and probably wouldn't know of Hints).
