Unfortunately a death certificate will usually only tell you his place of death as opposed to his usual address.

If you can trace a burial register it may help, as they often record the usual address.

To be honest if he was an inmate I would be surprised if he got a death notice in the local paper, but I would be happy to be proved wrong on that.

Whilst at the North Yorks Record Office today I had a look at the microfilm for marriages at St Mary's, Whitby but could not find John Hayes/Margaret Leadley's marriage in 1868, sorry.

Not really, in those times I think it was only St Mary's doing the marriages.  The Record Office has PRs for St Michael's - only start 1949 for marrs, St Hilda's start 1897, St John's & St Ninian's - no PRs for marrs at the RO.  You will need to look out of town, possibly Lythe, Fylingdales, Ugthorpe, Eskdaleside, Danby etc - they all come under the Whitby Registration District, or bite the bullet & pay a fortune for a copy cert! :(
