John Hayes - died Whitby 1884
« on: Wednesday 17 October 12 12:10 BST (UK) »
Hi

I believe John Hayes who died in Whitby in 1884 to be my 2x great grandfather.

He is listed in census records as being Builders Labourer and i think he was born in Limerick, Ireland.

I dont have much to go on but any info would be appreciated.

I would like to know if he is buried in whitby and if so where?

Many thanks
Andy

Hi, Andy, could not see any MI for john Hayes, so I looked at  the Whitby Gazette for that year, and;
Whitby Gazette Saturday 15 November 1884,
8th November at the Union Workhouse, John Hayes aged 54, Labourer.
It looks as if he was an inmate(what aweful word) at the workhouse if so I would assume that he would not have a monumental stone, he would, I assume again that he would have been buried in the cemetary.
I should think that the local authority would have a plot No.
Best Wishes Clive

Thanks Clive, not really what I wanted to hear but it is more or less what I expected.

I will have to pay a visit if I can find out the plot number. I doubt anyone will have visited. His wife died in Middlesbrough in 1891.

Will she have been in the workhouse too.

The fact that he died at the workhouse doesn't of itself mean he was ordinarily resident there as an inmate- he may simply have been a patient of the workhouse infirmary by virtue of illness or injury.
