Alice GIDDINS/GIDDINGS.
« on: Sunday 28 October 12 15:15 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I am looking for any info re an Alice GIDDINS/GIDDINGS.

Alice married a William HAYES in Biggleswade, 22 Jan 1793. She is listed as a widow on the FreeREG marriage entry so I am looking for a marriage of an Alice to a GIDDINS/GIDDINGS before 1793. Also, a death of a GIDDINS/GIDDINGS around 1792.

The reason that I think that he died around 1792 is because there is a birth of a Mary GIDDINGS 9 Dec 1792 who was baptised the same day as the marriage of William HAYES and Alice GIDDINGS in Biggleswade 22 Jan 1793.

So, I am assuming an Alice something married a GIDDINGS before 1792, he passed away after Alice conceived. Mary was born, and was christened at the same time as Alice's second marriage to William HAYES.

Kind regards,

Mark.

As the IGI doesn't show a father for Mary Giddings, the other scenario is that Alice's husband died well before 1792 and Mary was illegitimate. And sure enough, the transcript describes her as the illegitimate daughter of Alice. Possibly William Hayes was the father, particularly as they married so soon after Mary's birth. Perhaps the Overseers were standing behind him ready to throw him into jail if he didn't go through with the marriage. You'd need to check the bastardy records to see if there's a mention.

There are no Giddings burials in Biggleswade. The closest is James who was buried in Eaton Socon on 28 Jul 1792, or Henry also in Eaton Socon on 10 Nov 1790. But I can't see a marriage of Giddings/Alice in Beds on the IGI, nor in Hunts on the Hunts Marriage Index.

Still looking

I'm struggling!

I can see that William and Alice baptised two daughters in Biggleswade, but I can't find a burial for either William or Alice. Do you have any more information on what happened to them?

No David,

I know that they had a daughter Ann who was baptised 11 Oct 1800 at Biggleswade.

I am struggling to locate either of them with ref to either of their birth info.

The FreeREG has her down as 'widow' on the marriage entry to Wm Hayes. I am assuming she married in Biggleswade as that was her parish of birth. Perhaps it wasn't.

With Mary being illegitimate could they have moved to another parish (Biggleswade) to avoid disgrace?

Regards,

Mark.

David,

I did find a marriage of a George Giddings to an Alice Veal at Shenley, Herts 24 Sept 1781. One other, Samuel Giddins to Alice Frost in 1773 at Kidderminster, Worcs. The first one looks quite promising but I will need to see if there is a death listed for George.

Regards,

Mark.

I can see a listing for the burial of a Wm Hayes, 12 July 1832 at Bedford, beds.

Not sure if this helps you in any way.
