Death record for Louis/Lewis Philip Charles Wilton
« on: Friday 28 December 12 20:02 GMT (UK) »
I have located the baptism record for Louis Wilton at Joseph and Etheldreda Church in Rugeley, Staffordshire. October 21, 1856.  He does not appear with the family on the 1861 English census, so it appears he did not survive...but I am unable to locate any further record of him.  Also missing from the family census is the first born, Margaret Ruth, born March, 1846, in Australia.  It doesn't seem likely that she would have been employed in another household as the family was of some means.  Their parents were Major John Robert Wilton and wife Betsy Tanish (Clarke) Wilton.  I emailed the church archives but have not heard back as yet. :(

Do you have the service record of Major Wilton? Was the family outside of the UK at some time when the  children may have died. Deaths and  burials recorded abroad perhaps

Wilton's service record is a bit confusing.  It shows him in East Indies Sept. 1856 to Dec. 1857.  Lewis was born and baptised in Rugelry Oct. 1856 so this means Wilton's wife had stayed in the UK.
Service record next shows Wilton 'At Home' Sept. 1869 to Sept 1874.  The years from 1857 to 1869 aren't accounted for.  There is a note saying Wilton 'Sold Out' in 1859.  He was in the English census 1861 'Major h p [half pay] in the Army'  Doesn't appear he left the UK again untill Sept. 1874 when he went to Gibralter as Paymaster.  He retired in 1877.  So I still have two Wilton children unacounted for, Lewis b. 1856 and Margaret Ruth b. 1846 in Australia.  I've been looking for her death in England and Australia, but have not located anything.  Have traced children John Robert Hall Wilton as well as Catherine/Katherine Eleanor Wilton through marriages and death/Will :-\ records.  Jane Mary Wilton I have traced to a 1881 English census, she was a school governess.  Wilton's son Thomas Frederick Clarke Wilton is my great grandfather whom I have been able to trace here in Canada.

Hi,

I don't know if you are aware but the church you have mentioned is a Catholic one so some records may not be so easily accessible online.

If I have time in the next couple of weeks I will pop into the churchyard, which is not very big, and see if I can see any information on the name Wilton.

Sal

Hi...Thanks for thr reply.  I was in touch with Father Peter at the church.  He was the one that found Lewis and Catherine Wilton's records there for me.  He gave me the email address for the church archives to see if there was any further Wilton information there.  Haven't heard anything from them as yet.  Thanks bunches for the offer.
