Wilton's service record is a bit confusing. It shows him in East Indies Sept. 1856 to Dec. 1857. Lewis was born and baptised in Rugelry Oct. 1856 so this means Wilton's wife had stayed in the UK.
Service record next shows Wilton 'At Home' Sept. 1869 to Sept 1874. The years from 1857 to 1869 aren't accounted for. There is a note saying Wilton 'Sold Out' in 1859. He was in the English census 1861 'Major h p [half pay] in the Army' Doesn't appear he left the UK again untill Sept. 1874 when he went to Gibralter as Paymaster. He retired in 1877. So I still have two Wilton children unacounted for, Lewis b. 1856 and Margaret Ruth b. 1846 in Australia. I've been looking for her death in England and Australia, but have not located anything. Have traced children John Robert Hall Wilton as well as Catherine/Katherine Eleanor Wilton through marriages and death/Will

records. Jane Mary Wilton I have traced to a 1881 English census, she was a school governess. Wilton's son Thomas Frederick Clarke Wilton is my great grandfather whom I have been able to trace here in Canada.
