Lookup Please for my NELLIS/Nealis family 1800-1861
« on: Friday 18 January 13 19:09 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find any Tipperary info on James Nellis(1808) & his wife Eliza/Eliabeth (1808),
pre 1861 when Eliza & her children, Eliza (1841), James (1845), Patrick (1848), were in Stockport cheshire.
Maybe another son John (1840).
Eliza says she is a widow 1861 census. So I don't know if her husband died in Tipperary or England.
Would there be any Tipperary census?
Thank you.

see the previous topic : Bapt- Nealis/Nellis Tipperary

Some record transcripts for Co. Tipperary are on the pay-website mentioned - it's now call RootsIreland. Problem is you require a more detailed located to start a search as there are parts of Tipperary not included, also some parishes that dont have records back to the dates you need.

see : Introduction to Irish Records

were any of the children you mentioned born in England ?

If so there should be civil birth records for them to give you Elizabeth's maiden name.

It's worth following any the children born in Ireland through all possible English census returns, particularly the later ones, to see if they ever give a more detailed place of birth.

just a few minutes after I posted the previous reply an email arrived from the Irish Family History Foundation about the addition of transcripts for a number of parishes to their pay-website at RootsIreland. A search of the free index is now showing a possible match for a James Nellis in 1844 somewhere in North Tipperary.

Narrowing the Index search by parents first names, shows a match to them being James and Eliza or Elizabeth.

In addition to the name of the parish, an RC baptism transcript should give date of baptism, parents full names, and two godparents. There may also a place of residence - likely the name of the town or townland the family lived.

I bit of trial and error with that free index shows that baptism is listed under the RC parish of Templemore - based in the town of the same name

They just appear to be abbreviations for the principle names on the record.

Sometimes this section contains the name of the priest, or notes about about marriages etc. The various county centres use this section slightly differently. Some try to include any relevant notes in the margins or remarks columns of the registers (if they had them).
