St. Edmund Parish Cemetery
« on: Thursday 21 March 13 03:22 GMT (UK) »
Hello!

I am hoping that someone who lives near Salisbury, or knows the area, may help me answer a question. I have traced my family tree (Whittier family) back as far as 1538 and seem to have hit a dead end. I found a record that Henry Whittier (probably spelled Whytear) and his son Richard Whittier are buried in the parish cemetery. Several family members are also recorded to have been married and baptized in this parish.

My husband and I are traveling to London next month, and we'd love to take a day trip to visit the cemetery, but we are not sure if it still exists? The website for the parish says that it was closed many years ago, and combined with St. Thomas. I am also interested in where I may go to search through parish records for more information on my ancestors?

Thank you in advance for your help. I feel so grateful to have traced back this far, and would love to keep searching! My search was aided by a somewhat famous ancestral Quaker poet and abolitionist, John Greenleaf Whittier. Several books have been written on his life and lineage, which helped me fill in many blanks.  Any advice or hints are gratefully accepted!

Many, many thanks,

Mandy Whittier Breton

Welcome to RootsChat.   :)

Both the church and the churchyard still exist on Bedwin Street in Salisbury.  The church is now an arts centre.  The churchyard has been cleared on any headstones although some tombs still seem to be in place.  A photo of the church is here: http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2874427

The original parish registers - which began in 1559 - are in the care of Wiltshire & Swindon Archives:

Prior to this date your searches would have to be in other records e.g. land or manorial records and could well be much more difficult.

Good luck

Nell

Many, many thanks! I appreciate your help. I'm looking forward to trying to dig deeper, although as you mention I feel as though I may have gone as far as I can.

Best,
Mandy
