It depends whether any of her children went south and she went to live with one of them after the death of her husband, a daughter perhaps who would look after her mother in her old age. Or may be she just went to visit one of them knowing it was unlikely with her advancing years she would see them again and the visit proved to much for her.

Deaths Dec 1888
SCOTT Jane 80 Carlisle 10b 306
The 1881 census shows at least three Jane Scotts of a similar age in Cumberland including one in Carlisle aged 73, so I'm not saying the death registration above is your Jane Scott - it rather depends where your Jane Scott's 8 children were around the time of her death. If she did die away from Wigton it would have been an expensive business to take the body back, depending on how far away she was when she died. If she died in England her death would be recorded in England not Scotland. The body could not be moved back to Scotland or buried in England without the necessary death certificate obtained from the local registrar.
If her death in England is a possibility then it is whether you know where all her 8 children were likely to have been in 1888. From that information you can check whether there is a possible likely registration in England in one of the areas they lived in. There are quite a few Jane Scott deaths registered in 1888 but not that many with her advanced years.
Besides the one above for a Jane in Carlisle there are only two others for woman in their 80s, the first being to old.
Deaths Jun 1888
SCOTT Janet 87 Shifnal 6a 400
Deaths Dec 1888
SCOTT Jane 80 W. Derby 8b 247
SCOTT Jane 80 Carlisle 10b 306
The ones is their 70s are a bit to young. So if she did die in England in 1888 and they got her age right on death, it is either in Carlisle or W. Derby (West Derby being part of Liverpool). Are either of these two places likely?
If she was buried with her husband then the cemetery or church burial register might indicate where her body came from. If she wasn't (presuming he wasn't buried in a common grave) then it would seem more likely she died further away if she isn't with him.
