Plemonstall Cheshire
« on: Saturday 11 May 13 14:21 BST (UK) »
The 1841 census for Plemonstall Cheshire sub district Cathedral Division records my ancestor Sarah Driscoll b. 1818  living at Mayfield House, This appears to be part of a school as there is also Hoole House, and Hoole Hall. The majority of other names on the census are of scholars aged between 8 and 13 years.
Sarah is 23 and i believe she was a teacher, but it is unclear on the census as to what her position was here, although there may be a letter T against some of the adult names. I have tried to research old halls that may have been schools in this area but no luck, Can anyone one throw any light on this.
Thankyou
Joyce

Hi

I think the initials could be F S ~ female servant.

On the opposite page 6 males listed have M S~ male servant.

Just a thought

Thanks. I thought it may have been an S and now when i look properly i can see the M. In later life she did describe herself as a teacher and most of and her brothers and sisters were also teachers. So maybe it was just wishful thinking that she may have been also. I would still like to know if it was a school though or some other institution . Thanks for looking though

The official abbreviations used in the 1841 census are,  FS. Female servant, and MS. Male servant.

Hi

In the census the Rev. Isaac Temple was head of the house, maybe it was a Sunday School.

From G**gling : " Many children worked and may only have been educated in Sunday Schools, they were established in the 1780s and taught basic literacy, numeracy and Religious Education."

I wonder could it have been a boarding house belonging to a mill or factory, where the children lived when not working. I know there is one at Styal Cheshire, the children were sent there from a young age and worked very long hours and had a rough time.

claire

It could not be a Sunday School as the inhabitants had to be resident at midnight on census day, 6th June 1841, it would be a boarding school. There were many private boarding schools in the 19th century.

In the 1851 Education Census 29,425 private schools sent in returns for the whole country. Of these 4,956 were classified as Superior, which included boarding schools.

It was still a school in 1851, there were 12 pupils from, among others, Rome (British Subject), Scotland, and Ireland. Not a school in 1861. the Rev. Isaac Temple was the Rector of Plemstall
