Bohemia Place & Victory Hotel
« on: Saturday 11 May 13 21:26 BST (UK) »
Hi, On my Gt Grandad's birth certificate it says he was born in Bohemia Place, St Mary Magdalene, Hastings in 1876. Does anyone know whereabouts this would have been in relation to today's street names please?

Also the family had something to do with the running of the Victory Hotel either in Battle or Hastings sometime between 1876 & 1901, if anyone can shed any light on where this might have been I would be very grateful.

Thank you!

Can you include the names please?

Have you looked for the family in 1881 to see where they were?

My Gt Gt Grandparents were Robert & Jane Hatch or Hatcher, their son was Robert William Hatch. In 1881 they appear to be in Longfield, Sussex.  I think it is likely that they may have run the Hotel between 1891 & 1901.

Longfield is in Kent - not Sussex

In 1881 Robert is a brickmaker

In 1891 he is a wood dealer & hawker

Hi, Yes sorry I should've also mentioned the Hatch(er) family originated from Staplehurst, Kent. Robert was definitely a brickmaker, you make a very good point about him being a wood dealer & hawker in the 1891 census but it's definitely the right family. They moved around a bit & ended their lives in Capel, Kent.  The 1901 census actually has them as the Owens family in Five Oak Green, Kent, my theory being that Robert senior got into some sort of trouble (possibly connected to the hotel?) & changed his family's surname to Owens for a while until the heat was off.  In the same census Robert junior suddenly becomes William so Robert Hatch effectively disappears!  By 1911 Robert junior has reverted back to using Robert again......

No wonder I couldn't find them in 1901.

So any possible involvement with the Victory Hotel would not show on a census entry

Good evening,

Bohemia Place doesn't appear to exist any more. However Bohemia Rd is the A21 running north from the area of the pier up to London Rd. That area at the top end is still known as Bohemia. St Mary Magdalene is or was the area between the pier and Warrior square. The church which it takes it's name from is on the corner of Church Rd and St Margarets Rd. The Church of England took it out of use in the 60s and it is now the Greek Orthodox Church under the same name.

Hi, Yes Carol they've certainly given us the runaround, I'd previously dismissed the 'Owens' family until I went through the remaining Hatch children & kept being given this Owens family & looked more closely at them! As you say the hotel won't appear as their address on any of the censuses so I'm really just wanting to know if anyone has any idea as to where it might have stood.

Thank you for John915 for the info on the Bohemia area, you've also given me some food for thought as by chance I found a Miss Manning (Robert senior's wife)  living in Church Road in the 1867 Kelly's Directory, sadly it doesn't tell me her first name but if it's Jane or one of her relatives it could be another piece in the jigsaw.........!
