Long shot here.
Could the family be recorded as Lamont on 1851 Census??
Found a family with a Peter Lamont age 50  a Labourer and his wife Mary 44 both born Ireland at 2 Kilblain Street, Greenock.
Sons and daughters as follows - Mick age 22 born Ireland    John age 16 born Ireland.
Peter  age 13 born Lanarkshire Glasgow   Mary 13 born Lanarkshire Glasgow
Henry age 10 born Ireland      Biddy age 10 born Ireland.

Obviously if the info is correct this family came to Scotland pre 1838 the returned to Ireland around 1841 (Henry and Biddy born there) then returned again. Biddy is I think ??? short for Bridgit?

Do you think this could be the Slamons?

That looks a strong possible  :D

I think whatever the surname, it's jinxing my machine - I've tried to search through lists of Irish surnames and each time, my machine has hung  ::)

Thanks everyone.

Looby that does look like a strong possibility, I will check the births on SP for the children born in Scotland and see what I find.

Just found an RC baptism on SP  for a Mary Lamond on 23 July 1837 (born 13) at St Andrew's, Glasgow.  Parents - Peter Lamond and Mary Wilson

I've been searching a few of the Irish sites  and found that most of the Slamon (variations) seem to be in Co Galway or Co Offaly - couldn't find yours so far, even on the pay sites  :(

But why Lamont, is it an accent thing?

The household schedules which are used by the enumerators to enter on the pages in their census books would have been written by a member of the household - if literate - or given verbally to the enumerator. It might be that they had strong accents or the writing was poor  :-\

Again, the entry in the church register suggests that the S sound was not heard so it became Lam... rather than Slam... Another possibility is that Lamont/Lamond was more common to Scots ears than Slamon. It seems that they became Slamon around 1861  :-\

I wondered yesterday about  the accent when I saw  McSlane - I think it's definitely Mc*lane - I'm trying to 'hear' how an Irish person might pronounce various surnames.

Morning Sharon :D

Yes, because many people couldn't write no one knew how to spell their names. So spellings on Censuses and documents (BMD registrations) depend on who wrote them down and how they interpreted the name they heard.

I have a family of McLeans who mysteriously turned up on an a Census as McClung ;D.
