Messenger Family of Chilton
« on: Monday 27 May 13 10:16 BST (UK) »
I've hit the proverbial brickwall with my search for the Messenger family of Chilton can anyone help me find a little bit more information about them?

I am looking for the birth/Baptism of Ann Messenger circa 1826 in Chilton. On the 1841 census she is living in Chilton with Thomas Messenger 70, a farmer and Martha Messenger age 55. Thomas and Martha say they weren't born in the county. I am not sure if Martha is Thomas's wife or daughter-in-law or if Ann is their grandaughter.

Do later census entries confirm she was born in Chilton?  The family were living there in 1841 but it doesn't always mean the child was born there

I've checked all the censuses and she says she's from Chilton on all of them except the 1851 where it says Clifton, Bucks. I presume that Chilton had been misheard as Clifton.

I'm really stuck on this family as there doesn't seem to be any records for a Messenger family in Clifton and I don't know where to look next.

Is any father named on her 1849 marriage cert to William Munt?

Nothing on Family Search for her marriage unfortunately

I think the 1851 entry is probably just enumerator error

I've just ordered the certificate so it should arrive next week.

I've searched the IGI and numerous websites but there isn't much about any Messengers in Bucks.

Her birthplace is constant but there are a few years fluctuation in her birthyear between censuses.

Even allowing for that - there is nothing showing online.

I saw the age fluctuations but when I looked closely on one or two of them it was actually a transcription error.

The only way I am going to get any further is to see what her father was called and take it from there. I hope it's not Thomas or I'll be back to square one.  :D

Hi Margaret
I've had similar problems with tracing this family. My research has been on the backburner for a while, but I do have a copy of the marriage certificate for Ann messenger & William Munt (they are my gg grandparents). Ann's father is listed as George Messenger, a laborer. Hope that helps!
Regards, Carol.

I just looked up the 1841 census entry for George Messenger. He is aged 40 and living in Long Crendon, Bucks, which is approx. two miles south of Chilton. There are several male family members listed with George, no wife or daughters. I suspect that Thomas and Martha would be Ann's grandparents.

Regards, Carol.
