Does anyone know if there was a orphanage or convent at 81 South Mall Cork in 1934?I am trying to trace a relative of mine who was born there.I think her mother was unmarried so any information would be appreciated

Looking back at old directorys of Cork City 81 South Mall appears to be Solcitors office, Aucthioneers office etc. right back to 1820's not sure about upstairs rooms might have been rented out?

See here in 1824 http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mturner/cork/cork_city_pigot_merch.htm

& from 1945 Cork Improved Dwelling Co Ltd were based there etc.

In 1913 there was an Alfred Beale Stockbroker in the phone book listed at 81 South Mall
http://www.lennonwylie.co.uk/1913PhoneList14.htm#CORK DISTRICT

Appears to be one family living there in 1911

So looks very unlikely that it was ever an orphanage or convent etc. Perhaps your family rented a room upstairs?

Thanks for that info .Still wondering why a child born out of wedlock would be registered as having been born there .She was registered in 1949 aged 15 on the authority of the state .Any thoughts on that

Perhaps she was working for a family there as a servant girl. If you look at the 1911 Census there is a servant girl working there.
I know we are talking about over 20 years later. Perhaps someone connected to your family had a room rented upstairs.
Hard to know really not all unmarried mothers were forced to convents etc. I have a story in my family of a women who did not know she was pregnant
and collapsed in work one day to wake up with the surprise she had given birth.

Best option is to try get the baby birth cert from 1934. Would you like to me to look in the index I presume they did not take the fathers surname? If they are still alive you can PM me the name if you don't want it public.
