Joseph Harrison Elliott

I have the death certificate of my 2nd great Grandfather Joseph Harrison Elliott born 1872 in Gateshead, Durham who Married a Maria (unusre of maiden name) born in 1869 and I know about their children. I have gotten stuck and have been lead down several routes that have left me guessing and I can't seem to get anywhere. I hope to find his parents.

Is this the right couple on the 1901 census for Gateshead as birthplace does not tie in with where you say he was born?

Durham BMD show Maria Nyland as previously Johnson.  Unfortunately there is no middle christian name shown for Joseph to "clinch" it as the right entry

It is the right marriage - Maria Johnson married James Niland December qtr 1889 Durham 10A 610

Thank you, I had never noticed this before and on his death certifcate it mentions his Rank/Profession as a Coal Hever.

That could be possible maybe this is why I have been having diffuiculty in finding a marriage and Mary's maiden name.

I wonder could he have been in the war? Could this be part of the reason they married later?

It's more likely that Maria was still married and they had to wait for James to die before they could marry
