William Ingram Mariner 1861
« on: Tuesday 06 August 13 17:26 BST (UK) »
Hello

I was wondering if someone could help me please.

According to the 1861 census taken at Yarmouth, Norfolk, my ancestor William Ingram was located on a ship, as the census states 'shipping at sea and ports abroad'. It then states in the 1871 census that his occupation was a mariner, and that by then, he was married to a woman named Maria and had many children, George, Frederick, Charles, William, Maria and Ann. He is listed as being in military service from 1845 - 1854. In 1881, he is living in Kingston Upon Hull in the East Riding of Yorkshire.

He was born in 1833/1834.

My question is, could someone please find out the name of the ship/s he worked on? What rank he held, if any and any other information regarding his occupation

my thanks

Sirsimon

Not sure if this is the same person but Find My Past has records of a William Ingram born Great Yarmouth 13th September 1833. It includes a physical description and says he first went to sea in 1849. From what I can see I don't think it gives the names of any boats.

The person mentioned  on FindMyPast made at least two voyages in 1851 and 1853 possibly on the vessel CAST OFF of Seaton? from the port of Baltimore Co Cork.
He is described as William Ives Ingram Ticket number 449845.
Height 5ft 4 inch's Brown hair, Brown eyes,
He had some problem with his face, very difficult to read. He could write. He did not enter the RN.
You say he was in military service from 1845 until 1854 entering at age 12. if this is correct then it cannot be the same man.
No central Merchant Navy Personal records were kept from 1857 until 1913.
There is a William Ingram skipper of the fishing vessel JOHN in the 1861 census . There were several vessels with this name around at the time.
http://www.crewlist.org.uk/data/viewimages.php?regtype=MNL&year=1860&name=JOHN&page=302&imagesource=CLIPimages
Two were registered in the port of Yarmouth official numbers 5241 and 6755 You could try and see if there were crew agreements for these official numbers.
If they have survived they will be in The National Archive or National Maritime Museum but in my experience there will be the minimum information contained within.
