Milton Crossing & North Pirehill
« on: Saturday 07 September 13 17:08 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I have an Alan Godfrey map of Milton 1898. Would anyone know just where Milton Crossing was? I have an address from 1891 census which just says Milton Crossing.
Also where is North Pirehill again in Norton in Moors Milton?
Many Thanks
Sossle

Pirehill is the 'hundred' where Norton in the Moors and Milton lie (NE of Burslem, Stoke on Trent, along the present day A53 Leek Road).

'Milton Crossing' is listed between 'New Street' and 'Milton Junction' on the 1891 census.

The railway ran on a roughly North-south line through Milton which had it's own station. I'd guess that the Milton Crossing was a railway level-crossing around this point. As you probably know there are quite a few railways employees in the vicinity - plate-layers, signalmen etc.

Someone with better local knowledge will probably add more.

Paul

PS There are photos of the railway in this area on Flickr.

Hello Paul,

Thank you
for your reply. I have found the station of Milton on my map but it doesn't show New Street. I saw there is a Spice Exchange Restaurant at Milton Crossroads which is the corner of Leek Road & Bagnall Road (close to St Philips & St James Church) so am now not sure if that is Milton Crossing or whether it is near to the Railway Station.
I am taking it that North Pirehill is just another name for Milton & Norton in the Moors.

Many Thanks

I think north Pirehill just means in the north part of the hundred - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pirehill_Hundred
