Where to start looking ......

I am trying to find out what happened to an ancestor of mine. Would anyone know what I can expect to find in the Victoria Electoral roll and census returns (if any) after 1881?

Census returns in Australia, until fairly recently, they only kept the statistics.
There are a few minor exceptions in the early 1800s.

His name was Joseph Charles Bennett born 1858 in Cheshire married to Ellen. They left Britain sometime after 1882.

Here is a death notice for a Joseph Charles Bennett in 1932 in Victoria - he seems to be about the right age but wife is Minnie (perhaps a nickname ?).  http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article4467022

BENNETT -On the 4th August, Joseph Charles of 296? Bridge road, Richmond, the dearly
loved husband of Minnie Bennett, and loving father of Frank and Gwen -aged 74 years (Cremated

From Vic index the death of a Joseph Bennett was registered in 1933 and his father was Joseph Bennett and his mother was Charlotte Wills and he was born c 1858 reg 9104 See Sue's find of a 1932 death

Can you tell us his parents' names please?

I see there were various ads in 1909 when family were looking for a Joseph Charles Bennett who left England for Melbourne 26 years ago http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article57551672 (as a missing heir)
