Only existing on one census - no other records
« on: Monday 25 November 13 21:44 GMT (UK) »
On my great grandfather's 1901 census a 9 year old daughter is listed (this is from his first marriage, his first wife dies in 1904)

I can find no birth record of this daughter, or death or marriage (or on other census but to be fair she wasn't born on the 1891 and may have married/died by the time she was 19) - any one got any ideas

Her name is Nellie Tiday - her parents being William Tiday (he is John William on some documents) and Isabella Bowker (living at 75 Coral Street, Leicester)

They married in 1882 so the birth shouldn't be registered under her maiden name (I did try looking though)

It's a long shot but a Miss Tiday left England on board the Dunottar Castle bound for South Africa in 1902. No age or initial is given only that she was single. date of sailing 22 November from Southampton.

Nellie would only have been 10/11yrs old in 1902 and her mother didn't die until 1904 so don't think it is her

Her father  appears to  marry  again in 1906,   to  an Anne Hill,  and may have  had 2 more children  before 1911,   Isabella   b 1907  and William 1909, can't seem to  see them on last census either  ,  and I've looked  under HILL too ,   Maybe  they  were  suffragette  supporters  so     refused  to do the 1911 census ,  ( not that   we can post  details here )

That's right - Isabella was my grandmother

His army records show William (and the two boys born after 1911) were born in 33 Taylor Street - which is where his sister is living in the 1911 census - which is where he (and Ann and the 4 children) are living during the war years.

On his Army records there is no mention of Nellie living in the same house - but as she wouldn't have counted as a dependent that doesn't mean she wasn't (that said once they died in the 1920s his sister only took in the boys not Isabella so maybe she wouldn't have let an adult daughter live there)

They were in the Salvation Army I believe - would that tie in with suffragette supporting?

There is a marriage for a Mary Ellen E Tiday in1910 to Edward Thompson, in Leicester, she is shown on the 1911 to have been born in 1892 in Leicester? A possibility?

I was looking at the Mary Ellen Enderby marriage and it seemed a possibility.

However, I found a tree which has the marriage as 19th February 1910 at St Matthew, which came from Edward's army record. The record gives children as Mary Ellen, on 16th May 1910, and William Henry on 25th May 1915. The army record and second birth record both give Mary's maiden name as Enderby, although the marriage index is clearly Tiday.

The other puzzle is that there is no birth record for Mary Ellen Tiday or Enderby c1891 but, in 1901, there is a Lois Enderby in the same household as Nellie, so there seems to be a link.
