I have searched on other areas of Rootschat for the family of Elizabeth, and her story as an adult. I've been fortunate - I was able to sort out more regarding the Lodge family and Elizabeth's life from her arrival in New Zealand in 1839 to various marriages, liaisons, troubles - an exciting life in some ways - and her death at the age of abt 78 in 1912.
Now I am hoping to find more details about her birth. I suspect she had 2 other male siblings who died as infants as well. From the information that I have, Elizabeth Margaret Lodge was born about 1834. She emigrated from the UK with her parents, Harriet Lodge (nee Williams) and John Lodge, and her baby brother William Lodge who died just before the Aurora landed in Petone, NZ in January 1840. Her age is given as 5 on the passenger list, and this matches with her age given at death. The birth certificate of her first child noted her own birth place as Huddersfield, and her death certificate notes her place of birth as Yorkshire. Her mother's death certificate notes as 'living issue' 3 males and 3 females. I think this may have been an error, and rather than living issue, it noted 'children born alive' rather than 'children still alive'. Harriet had 3 female and 1 male children that I am aware of. It could be a possibility that in the years 1831 (married) and 1834 (Elizabeth's birth) she had 2 other male children. Harriet did not have children from her 2nd marriage, and her 2nd husband had no children from a previous marriage that I am aware of.
So I am presuming to start with that she was born in or near Huddersfield. Her father John Lodge was possibly working as a stone mason at the time. He and her mother Harriet (or Harriett) were both born in Liverpool, Lancashire. At some point - maybe in 1839 - they were living in Birmingham prior to embarking for NZ. I am yet to find her brother William's birth - he may have been born just before civil registration in 1837.
Can anyone help me with where to find parish registers or nonconformist baptisms for Huddersfield in 1834? - cheers, Louise
