HARROLD, BEDS lookup WOODINS (or WOODIN/WOODENS/WOOTTEN/WOODING?) please
« on: Thursday 27 February 14 09:00 GMT (UK) »
Please could somebody check the parish records if they have them for a

Mary Woodins b abt 1774 Harrold, to a Jonah Woodins and wife Mary and any other siblings ( I believe there is at least an Ann and a Thomas).

Mary Woodins is the one I am really hunting for though, even with different parents if you find her. Parents (if Jonah and Mary) married in CARLTON 1.6 miles away, possibility of baptism there too

With many many thanks

Hello Lesley

Jonah Woodin of Harrold married Mary Sperry at Carlton on 11 Jun 1770. Their banns were read at Harrold on 4 Mar 1770. They baptised Ann on 5 July 1772 and Thomas on 29 Sept 1775, both at Harrold. No other childen have been baptised to Jonah & Mary at Harrold or Carlton.

Jonah Woodin, labourer is buried at Harrold on 9 Sept 1782, I suspect he was son of Thomas & Rebecca Woodin who baptised him at Harrold on 21 Oct 1744.

There are no other Mary Woodin or spelling variants baptised at Harrold around 1774.

Regards John

Thanks so much John! That's really helpful!

I also found a Jonah Wooding age 40 Ag Lab in the 1841 census in Carlton earlier today. Interestingly, he lived next door to a Joseph Wooding, also an Ag Lab aged 64 (so b approx. 1777). I am wondering if Joseph is his dad and also sibling to Ann bap 1772 and Thomas bap 1775, but no birth record for Joseph to be found either ...in which case I suspect Mary may be a sibling too, if only we could find her birth record. hmmmm

Beds Archives have the will of Thomas Wooding, woodman of Harrold ref 1827/27 who was buried at Harrold on 22 May 1827 age 75, so born circa 1752. The will is dated 13 Aug 1811 & executors were William Johnson of Carlton, lace dealer & the Rev Charles Vorley and was witnessed by E Abbott (wife of Samuel Abbott, baker of Harrold) & W Abbott. It mentions leaving properties/monies to my wife Mary, to my niece Ann Ayres who has not reached 21, so is in the trust of her mother Ann Ayres, wife of John Ayres, and also mentions my brother-in-law Thomas Boddington.

** Thomas Wooding married Mary Boddington at Harrold on 9 Oct 1777
** John Ayres married Ann Boddington at Harrold on 8 Jan 1789

His will leaves an amount to the Trustees of Carlton Meeting House...... the residue divided equally between all children of my bothers & sisters namely Jonah Wooding, William Wooding, Joseph Wooding, Ann Parker & Sarah Tew/Thew.

The will has a codicil dated 13 July 1821 that states the residue goes to each of my brothers William & Joseph & sister Ann, wife of John Ayres for it to be divided equally to the sons & daughters of my brothers & sisters; Jonah Wooding, William Wooding, Joseph Wooding, Ann Parker & Sarah Thew.

Shame it doesn't say who was the parent of each nephew/niece however it does state that if Jonah Wooding dies it goes to his son Thomas & then to Thomas's wife/widow Elizabeth & that Sarah Thew has son William Thew.

** John Parker of Chellington marred Ann Woodin at Harrold on 28 Dec 1770

I thought I'd pass this on in case someone can work out relationships.

This is great information John! I have some of these same people as potential unconfirmed members of Mary's family and had been digging at their records online. But no mention of Mary - drat! Her bap record says her father is Jonah and I believe that to be Jonah bap 1744 and her mother Mary (Sperry I believe).

I had Thomas 1752 (the will author)  as possible sibling to Jonah 1744 and Ann 1750 as well. I also have a Robert bap 1749, Israel bap 1754 and Mary bap 1754 all as possible siblings too. Parents of Elizth & Israel are Thomas and Rebecca on their bap records, same as Jonah. Mary was apprenticed as a lacemaker in Harrold. Perhaps they were deceased before the will was written and had no offspring? I don't have Joseph or William their brothers, but I do have a Joseph b1777  in the censuses who I believed could also be one of the sibling's sons so the name fits... (he also had a son named Jonah 1801 so I suspect he could be Jonah's!)

Also I have a record for Thomas Wooding m Rebecca Wersely (Wesley I believe looking at the other people there at the time) in 1743 in Odell. This potentially being the father of Thomas, Jonah etc

I wonder if Mary Woodens had died by 1811 when the will was written - quite possible as her last potential offspring I have found is 1809

You say "The will has a codicil dated 13 July 1821 that states the residue goes to each of my brothers William & Joseph & sister Ann, wife of John Ayres for it to be divided equally to the sons & daughters of my brothers & sisters; Jonah Wooding, William Wooding, Joseph Wooding, Ann Parker & Sarah Thew. " and " Shame it doesn't say who was the parent of each nephew/niece"

I don't think these are the nephews and nieces being listed, he is listing his siblings again and saying the money should be split between their offspring
