1863, orphaned in the Gold Fields - what happened
« on: Tuesday 02 September 14 07:40 BST (UK) »
HI
My great, great grandmother was born Anne Gates, married George Barnsley and had 5 children to him, 3 in Cumbria, one at sea on the Tippoo Saib coming to Australia in 1852 and my great Grandmother in 1853 in Victoria, Australia. George died in 1858 and Anne married a Samuel Kemp and had 2 children to him. She was murdered at Fryer's Creek in 1863 and Samuel's 2 children were looked after by another woman until he remarried. What happened to the 4 four remaining step children? Legend has it that these 4, aged from 10 to 16, were sent to an orphanage, possibly in Western Australia.  There names and approximate ages in 1863 were; Thomas Scott Barnsley, (16), John Gates Barnsley,(14), Pauline Herlessa Barnsley, (11), and Anne Scott Barnsley, (10).  What would have happened to them? How can I chase this up? Any assistance greatly appreciated.

Anne GATES and George BARNSLEY have five children, one being your great grandmother.

You have given names and ages for four children at 1863...who is the fifth please?

Is your great grandmother, b. 1853,  the youngest child...Ann Scott BARNSLEY?

Can you give details of your great grandmother's marriage...when, where, who...and her death. Might help in locating her siblings.

Jason perhaps you should go back & read all the information that has been posted previously on other threads in regards to some of the children...

Hi Jason
In my family I had 2 children left without parents around 1873 in Victoria. They were made wards of the state in Victoria. There is nothing for your BARNSLEY children on the Index to the Children's Registers of State Wards, 1850 -1893.
It would be unlikely that the children would be sent interstate unless there was family in WA.
The most common thing that would happen is that family would take the children in. If Ann KEMP/BARNSLEY nee GATES had family in Victoria then they would probably help with the younger children. However both Thomas Scott BARNSLEY 16 and John Gates BARNSLEY 14 would have been at an age where they would be able to work.
Just my thoughts
Hope that is what you were asking for.
Cheers Leonie

Jason, Ann's brother William GATES and his wife Mary Ann MERRIN also came to Australia (ship Tasmania in 1853).  There appears to have been some contact between him and Ann's children, but at least three of the children, Pauline, Ann, and their half brother (by Ann's second husband) were living with their aunt and uncle Francis THOMAS.

You will need to read this article:

EMERALD-HILL - At this court, on Saturday, Francis Thomas, a middle-aged man, was charged with a capital felony, committed on Ann Barnsley.....

http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/5788970

Perhaps we can work out who the aunt and uncle were.

Editing to say there were THREE sisters.

Debra  :)

Hi Dundee I have read the article and I was pretty shocked that she was obviously sexually assaulted by her uncle. This is a family with a tough history. Her Mother was killed in a sexual manner in 1863 and there was an inquest, and the newspaper in Castlemaine got involved and sister Pauline gave evidence there, too. I have just found another article from the Melbourne Argus dated 20 Jan 1868 where Anne's son who was Superintendent of an orphanage in Western Australia was charged with excessive violence towards orphans. He got off because of a 'whitewash' but died of Typhoid a few years later and his son went on to become a Rhodes Scholar and Mum continued working at the orphanage. Anne had 7 brothers and 2 sisters and one brother was William, born 24 August 1826 but I know nothing else about him. Her 2 sisters were Elizabeth (bapt 1 April 1819) and Frances (bapt 5 May 1825). One of these may have been married to Francis Thomas - possible? Thanks for your thoughts Leonie - much appreciated!
