WHITWORTH family of Earls Barton
« on: Wednesday 17 September 14 16:35 BST (UK) »
I have just learnt from the 1851 Census entry that John WHITWORTH (c1770/71-1855), although he mainly seemed to live in London and Bedfordshire, was actually born in Earls Barton, Northants. I recall that a number of people have researched these WHITWORTHs in Earls Barton, including Anthony Whitworth, Roger W. Whitworth and Alan Whitworth of Whitby, but no longer know how to contact these people. Can anyone help, or offer suggestions for the baptism of John?

Haven't found the baptism -but there is a tree on An*****y which gives his parents as James Whitworth 1729-1806 and Ann Stayner 1735-1822 if this helps?

Thank you Suz! I understood that couple to be James WHITWORTH and Ann STANYON, who were married in Earls Barton church on May 25, 1755, and who were reputedly the parents of Benjamin WHITWORTH (c1775-pre-1841), which sounds plausible, as John and Benjamin's families subsequently linked up in Bedfordshire. Can you give more precise details of the tree on Ancestry?

apologies - Ann's surname is Stanyer (posted n and y wrong way round)

Only use tree as a guide as trees are not always correct
The tree I looked at gives John Whitworth as having 13 siblings -will list them shortly

Dear Suz et al.
I am very wary of all tables on websites. Yesterday I was in the Society of Genealogists Library in London, and saw transcripts of the Earls Barton registers in the 18th century. From those, and the Will of James WHITWORTH, I extracted the following issue for James and his wife, Ann:

Robert (bpt. April 14, 1756) (died post-1806, maybe 1829)
Ann (bpt. October 9, 1757); she married John CLARKE, of Harrold, Beds, and she was still alive in 1803, but reputedly died in 1829
Thomas (bpt. July 11, 1760) (reputedly died in 1839)
Mary (bpt. December 29, 1761) (reputedly died in 1844)
Temperance (bpt. September 11, 1765); she had married Thomas KNIGHT, and was still alive in 1803, with a son, Samuel, but she reputedly died in 1810).
James (bpt. April 19, 1767) (died post 1806; maybe in 1853)
Elizabeth (bpt. July 12, 1769) (reputedly died in 1833)
John (bpt. February 19, 1771) (1770/71-1855) (supposedly)
William (bpt. November 25, 1772) (reputedly died in 1849)
Joseph (bpt. June 4, 1774) (reputedly died in 1841)
Benjamin (bpt. August 30, 1775) (appears to have died before 1841, probably in 1832)
Charles (bpt. April 25, 1777) (reputedly died in 1862)
Elizabeth (bpt. May 25, 1778)

I have also discovered that my John WHITWORTH was married again at the ripe old age of 75 in 1845, and have ordered his marriage certificate, which will hopefully confirm who his father was.

I do feel the dates for children I posted are little more than a guess in parts

the Charles whose death was recorded Dec qtr 1862 Newport Pagnell was Charles West Whitworth

I have found this burial record
Charles Whitworth age 55 b.c. 1778
Burial 1 January 1833 All Saints Northampton
