TADEUSZ BOBA - AIRMAN 1940's -1974
« on: Friday 27 March 15 14:59 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone please suggest where I might search for information on a wartime refugee from Poland who became an airman and stayed on in the RAF until 1974.

His name was Tadeusz Boba and he was a pilot with 304 Squadron

He retired to East Yorkshire and died on 4th August 2002; he was cremated at Hull

Many thanks

If you are looking for his service record it will still be held by the MoD.
The link below explains who can apply, what information you will receive (depends on date of death and your relationship to the deceased.)  You will need his death certificate and it will also cost 30 pounds and a longish wait as so many are applying at the moment.

The National Archives research guide may also be of help. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/atoz/r.htm#

There is a shipping record 21March 1952 for a Tadeusz Bober age 42 of 395 Upper Richmond Road London, a French polisher. In the column for country of citizenship it says 'stateless' Intended country of future residence Canada He departed Southampton with destination Nova Scotia

A second shipping record
Tadeusz Bobr birth date 13 Dec 1914
Port of Departed Southampton, 4May 1957
Destination Quebec, Canada on the ship Homeric This one is with family and is an analytical chemist from Yorkshire so a big difference in occupation and place of residence

Ah I see your Tadeusz married in the Hull registration district in 1948 but the wife's name on the shipping record is Irene which is not the same as that on the marriage reg.
None of the ages match up for these men.

To Crisane,

Thank you, I was aware of that but he died in 2002 so I am excluded from his records as I am not family; I am helping the family of one of the men who was in his air crew during the war.  But thank you for taking the trouble to try to help me.

To Crisane,

Sorry, I meant to also thank you for the information about his marriage - that was completely new to me and will be very useful in my investigation.

To Whiteout7,

In your first post you mentioned that his middle name may be Jozef.  This is far from the first suggestion of that fact and I know that he would have to give his full name on an application for naturalisation so I believe that it is correct.  Thank you for your help.

To Whiteout7,

That is pretty good information and I have checked out the photo with family photos of the people I am trying to help.  It's a match!

This is definitely the man I am looking for.  He is one of a six man crew; they all survived the war and spread themselves across the country.  One of them even went to live in Largo, Florida, USA but left very little behind in terms of documented evidence.

You say, quite correctly, that he is well documented - but only for a couple of short term actions!  In your words "Pretty cool"  By the time I have finished, I hope you will be able to say "Ice cool" or "Super cool"  because there was a lot more to the man - and to the whole crew.

Anyway, thanks for your information.

To Whiteout7,

Do you live in Hull?  Do you happen to know what is the current use of 14 Mersey Street?  Does it still even exist?
