Frances (Fanny) Cotton, Coventry.
« on: Saturday 11 July 15 13:36 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am trying to fill in some gaps in my research of the Cotton family in Coventry.

My 3rd Great Grandfather was baptised in 1817 at St. Michael's Coventry.
His mother is stated as Fanny Cotton. He had a brother who was baptised on the same day. There is no father recorded.

I have found a possible baptism record for Fanny, named as Frances Cotton in 1797 also baptised at St. Michael's, Coventry. The parents are listed as Abraham Cotton and Mary. She seems to have been baptised at the same time as Isaac Cotton.

There is a death record for Frances Fanny Cotton in 1859 in Warwick.

I have been trying to locate these people on the 1841 and 1851 census but I cannot find anything and am getting a little frustrated! I have found John, Joseph and their families on later censuses but there are gaps earlier on.

I was hoping there may be someone who could shed some light on this!

Thank you,
Emily.

Welcome to rootschat, Emily.

Is your 3rd great grandfather John or Joseph, and who did he (or they) marry (to help find in 1841/1851 etc)?

Fanny Cotton could have been married after the two sons' baptisms, and so on the census under a different surname (or died before 1841)

Thank-you

Do you know the age of this person only there is a birth for a Frances Fanny Cotton in 1858 Warwick.
If the death in 1859 was hers then she wouldn't have appeared on a census or be the person you are looking for.

Is John married to Mary Ann?  They have a daughter Fanny and in 1851 Allesley are transcribed as Collon

John 34 born Coventry
Mary Ann 34
William 2
Thomas 11 months

1841 Polesworth which is where a Frances Cotton died in 1859 age 59 possible for her

John Cotton 40
Frances 40
George 10
William 4
George 75

As suggested yours may have died before 1841 or married and be under a different surname  :-\

Hello,
Thank you both for such quick responses  :)
John is indeed my 3rd great grandfather. He was married to Mary Ann so I think you are right; the 1851 census is Collon.
It does look like I made a mistake with Frances fanny dying in Warwick.
I was hoping that if I found John or Joseph on the 1841 / 51 census I may find fanny living with them. I seem to have a fascination for finding more about her!
Thank you again, you have been very helpful  :)
Emily.

When did John marry Mary Ann - had he been married before?

This 1848 marriage looks likely:

If Emily has the certificate it would be interesting to know who the witnesses were.

Thanks,

Both seemed a bit old for first marriages.
