OLD PIONEER OF NORTH
Mr. William Hobby Saw Much Hard Work
Mr. William Hobby, who died in Pirie Hospital on Friday after three weeks' stay at the institution, spent many years of his life on pioneering work in the northern part of the State. As a young man he worked on Government dam sinking north of Port Augusta and as far as Olary on the Broken Hill line.
Mr. Hobby was born at Bendigo Victoria 81 years ago. He was early at work with teams, and did a lot of carting for contractors in the country districts of South Australia In 1880 he married Miss Emma Satchell of Williamstown (near Gawler) and went to Broken Hill, where he worked as a teamster in the open cut when the Barrier was in its infancy.
After having lived at Broken Hill many years he came back to this State in 1896. and settled at Kersbrook. Later he removed to Williamstown where Mrs. Hobby died three years ago.
Mr. Hobby, who had been blind for the past 12 years, was a constant sufferer in later life, and was a victim of many heart attacks. He had been in Pirie Hospital three weeks when the
end came.
There are two daughter and one son left— Mesdames. G. Rees ( Adelaide) and E. C. Giles (Pirie) and Mr. S Hobby (Cambrai)
