South Tawton Church records lookup.....PLEASE

Hi Everyone

A contact ordered a Marraige Certificate, when she received it the brides father's name is wrong.

Marraige Certificate details are :

South Tawton Church,  November 3rd 1865

Elizabeth Gillard aged 20. FATHER : Grace Gillard   

James Crocker aged 21. FATHER : James Crocker

WITNESSES : John Powlesland + Grace Crocker.


The Brides Father's name should be GEORGE and not Grace, is there a chance that somebody could compare the church records to what was down on the certificate PLEASE.

Any help, suggestions etc will be much appreciated.
We are almost sure that this couple are our rellies, just might be a slip of the pen when they put the fathers names down

Hi Caroline

Just to confirm your findings on the cert are untrue this is the 1861 census.

 I would get the Reg Office that sent you the copy of marriage cert to check the entry as it could be a hand written copy by the current registrar and their eyes may just have wondered down the entry a bit as the witness name also appears to be Grace.

If this is the case maybe tehn they shold by right rectify the mistaek free of charge.

Hi - I was the one that ordered the Cert.    Got it from the GRO in Southport.

Always under the impression that these were direct copies ie not hand written by staff.  Am I wrong?

You were right the first time with Southport

I am not sure about the HQ office that handles them but I know my three local Reg Offices copy them by hand.

Just a thought maybe the witness started to write in the wrong box before the Clergy realised.

I would still check though with GRO Office at Southport by phone or email.

Thanks Wendy for your suggestion.  When I get home I'll email the GRO - will then be able to give them the cert order number etc.

Interesting about the witnesses as they were John Powlesland and Grace Crocker.
