Peter Hampson 1861 and anything else please

Peter Hampson c1837 is showing up in the 1861 census. He states Hesketh (Lancashire) as his birth place. Could someone fill me in on the household information and if he can be sited in any other records please.

I am descended from William the Cooper but as his son William Spencer H. was the only one of twelve to survive to adulthood am now looking at the next generation back. William and his wife Margaret nee Spencer were very religous but not in a main stream way and hence they did not marry or baptise their children in a regular church. Glad you also agree that Peter from Hesketh is also the Peter very much from Little Hoole. Mind you going by Google maps you could just about throw a stone from one place to the other. But where is Peter after 1861?  William died in 1877, son William came out to NZ in 1879 and Mum Margaret followed in 1880. She crusaded here and Australia for 4 years drawing huge crowds, then scandel  . Went off to California with a married man and out lived son William by 5 years. But she was nice enough to add his name to her husbands tombstone back in Toxteth Park.

Gosh, what a web!  Not sure which is the most shocking  William the Cooper's son being only one of his 12 children to grow up to adulthood or his crusading mother upping sticks with a married man!

In  1837 on FreeBMD (Sep Qtr to Dec Qtr) there is just one Peter HAMPSON Birth Registration, in the Dec Qtr. In Preston.  None  in Preston in the next couple of years

As Hoole falls into the Preston District and as your Peter was christened in December 1837 in Hoole - that Birth Registration is perhaps likely to be his?

Because  I'd lay bets that  this is him :

Published in the Carlisle Patriot - Friday 10 December 1897
An Article titled: REMARKABLE RECORD IN LIFE SAVING WHITEHAVEN

It reports that on Tuesday, 7th December 1897, John HAMPSON of Whitehaven was presented with an "illuminated address from the Royal Humane Society" by the Chairman of the Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners, in honour of his (John) having saved a little girl from drowning in the Harbour. 

The article goes on to say that John had been previously honoured in a similar way, for having saved three lives at San Francisco. He had also saved or tried to save in the past 15 years (so since about 1882) a further 25 lives at Whitehaven.

The article then adds that John's father, well-known fisherman Peter HAMPSON  had himself saved 20 lives - and that he (the Chairman) deems them to be a 'life-saving family'.

The Chairman apparently regretted that the Royal Humane Society  could not be persuaded to bestow a better recognition than the address, for John's courageous acts, but he (the Chairman) was glad he (John) had received a present from other sources.

Looks like John did eventually get that more tangible honour:

An article titled: GALLANT WHITEHAVEN MAN SAVED FORTY-NINE LIVES

It reports:  The Mayor of Whitehaven, presented on behalf of the Board of Trade, a Bronze Medal to John HAMPSON for gallantry & saving lives at sea. It reports that John is age 36  (so born abt 1866) and is a member of the Naval Reserve. It states John  has received two previous certificates of merit from the Royal Humane Society.

You have made my evening.   I had never heard of Whitehaven Cumberland till only recently. Peter's younger brother Thomas (1840) married a Jane nee Wilson who is born in Whitehaven. Thomas is unemployed in 1881 and they and 3 children are living with her parents. That is the 3rd record that I have found/been shown where my Hampsons are recorded as Thompson.

Am wondering where 8 year old Margaret Hampson/Kyle is in 1871?
