1937 newspaper article British Columbia drowning
« on: Wednesday 16 December 15 13:42 GMT (UK) »
Wondering if anyone has access to BC newspaper archives/film regarding a drowning that occurred on 17 Oct 1937.  The individual disappeared from a ferry (no info on which, where from or destination), drowned, body not recovered.  Not sure if it was Victoria or Vancouver where the newspaper article may be found.  The individual was Ethel Maud (nee Tilley) Condon Connor born 1888 in Newfoundland.  She may have had yet another surname at time of incident as there is family lore indicating she was married three times, twice in BC, although we have not found record of a marriage subsequent to her 1925 (second) marriage to Leo C. Connor.  So, I'd be looking for a newspaper article on a date subsequent to 17 Oct in which the incident is mentioned, her married surname at time of incident, etc.  Any help would be appreciated.

There is a brief account of a boat accident on that day involving an Ethel Maud Larson and her brother in law, Maurice Oscar Larson, that took place on Lake Cowichan, near Victoria.  However, they were in a rowboat, not a ferry.
This account appeared in the Vancouver Sun on 20 October 1937, page 1, under the headline "Boat Found Overturned."

You're welcome.
Strangely, though, I haven't been able to locate any BC death records for either Ethel Maud Larson or Maurice Oscar Larson.   :-\

And strangely no marriage record for her in BC to a Larson.  Hmmmm.....

That's why I love genealogy. . .

Thanks again!

...... a drowning that occurred on 17 Oct 1937.

I've been looking into this as well. Wondering what your reference was for that drowning date in the first place?

It was sister of my great grandmother, and that is the date held by the family as the date of her death, so it is an oral tradition.  That being said, who knows, she may have just decided to start a new life, although approaching age 50 that seems unlikely.  There should have been a coroner's inquest for "presumed dead", shouldn't there?  (I believe that J.H. Boyd would have been the coroner and there is a story on the internet that he kept a notebook on his cases).

The notes and papers of John Henry Boyd, coroner and magistrate, are kept at Kaatza Station Museum and Archives in the town of Lake Cowichan, BC.  It may be worth contacting the museum to see if they can provide you with some additional information about this supposed drowning.

Yes, found that, and had been thinking along the same lines as I don't expect to be in BC anytime soon.  Thanks again for the suggestions!
