Please Help! A Mystery to me. COMPLETED!
« on: Wednesday 20 July 05 12:38 BST (UK) »
Hi all
This is a mystery to me. My own N.Z. birth has been registered 3 times. 2 times in 1960 with different surnames and again in 1964(adoption). I was wondering why when i was born i would have been registered under 2 surnames. One, my mothers maiden name and the other being her surname prior to divorce.Last one after remarriage in 1961, which was clear as i was adopted. Possibly someone out there might be able to shed some light.

Erm, without being too blunt, are the father's details included on both of the 1960 ones?

Or, it may have been because she was getting divorced (and changing surnames) herself?

Hi Pauline
No the fathers name wasn't. Just had not recorded. I know the fathers name though(CAMPBELL). I requested my b/c from what info i got from bdm fiches (pre-adoption cert.FIELD)and of course they couldn't send it to me because there was an adoption order. I had my post adoption cert.TURNER and of course when i finally got my cert. , my surname was then VARTHA. At the time i was born my mother was a Vartha and of cause later divorced and  i was adopted becoming Turner. Why she had registered my birth under her maiden name Field, i don't know. Perhaps she  had to to become eligible for child maintenance.

Possibly not married when you were born ?

then reregistered when she married, (same year) ?

Have you a copy of the Vartha - Field marriage to check dates ?

That could also be that Vartha adopted you, as this would also lead to 2 regos.

Were both the first registrations done within 6 weeks of you being born?  This is the statutory requirement.  If one was done outside this time, then I'm not sure what would have been happening.

If both were actually done within the six weeks, then I would suggest that perhaps the registration was done in error by two different people not knowing the other had already done it.  The person registering in the maiden name could have done so knowing the divorce was happening but not realising that it hadn't actually gone through yet.  Perhaps your mother was actually using her maiden name again but legally still with the married name - the person doing the duplicate registration may not have known this.

I think if there is an attempt to register the same child twice (in New Zealand where the registry offices wouldn't be dealing with the numbers of events that UK offices would) it would possibly be picked up if the surnames were the same, but much less likely if two registrations have been done in different names.  It would be interesting to see both certificates and see who the informant was in each case.

Does this mean you are eligible for three lots of benefit? I have heard of people wanting to be twins to do all the work they had looks like you made it in triplicate.

Cheers Heather

Hi Lyn

Don't know what NZ registry requirements are but in OZ, they would be the same Registration but referenced twice.

As a father wasn't recorded they sometimes reference under both the married and maiden names.

My birth certificate still has the same registration no. but they have altered the details to accomodate my adoption.
My twin sister on the other hand has her original BC which is stamped with adopted on it.

Cheers

Genni
