Frank Cutts

Hi all
While looking for my Cutts family from Rivenhall in
Essex on the 1861 census I noticed that there was a
grandson living with them at the time who was born in
Scotland!
 There is no mention on the census page of just where in Scotland he might have been born to help me find him.
Can anyone recommend a good web- site for Scottish research along the lines of English Origins and have you any tips on how to proceed in research from a distance?


The family were as follows;

Frank Cutts - grandson - 15 - Scotland

You will note the absence of a married daughter or a son old enough to be his father.

I would be grateful for any thoughts on this one.

Hi Carol,

Looking at the image, I believe that the age of grandson Frank is actually 5 and not 15.  Someone has entered crosses to the left of the male ages (and to the right of the female ages) and it is one stroke of the cross against Frank's age which makes the age look rather like 15 - but I am sure it is 5.

This would mean he could be a son of (the unmarried) Hannah 26 or of (the unmarried) Eliza 22, or even of (the married) Joseph 24 who, in 1861, is living with his wife Mary and 1yo daughter Emma, in the household of his father-in-law, James PENNOCK, in Rivenhall.

An age of 5 would mean that Frank was born 1855/6 so he should have made it into the time of Statutory Registration in Scotland (though unfortunately he's not in the IGI which tends to have most of the Stat Reg births between 1855 and about 1875).  You could check on the pay-per-view site, ScotlandsPeople at:
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
for Frank's birth.
A free surname search on that site shows that CUTTS is an uncommon name in Scotland - but, unfortunately, shows no CUTTS baptisms/births between 1853 and 1857 .....

I could not find Frank on the 1871 census for England & Wales but there is, on FreeBMD, the death of a Frank CUTTS, age 10, June quarter 1866, in Witham which might well be the same Frank.

There is also a possibility for Hannah as a servant in Witham.

Hi Carol, might be an idea, if you are going to search on ScotlandsPeople, to vary the spelling or use wildcards.  eg. Coutts could be one version

Hi all
Many thanks for the wonderful suggestions I will take another look at the census image and see what I make on the age.
It might be worth sending for that death certificate to see if it is the same child, and also taking a look at that web site  mentioned .

Just to leet you know that I have rechecked the census image and you are right it is definitely 5 years old not 15, thankyou for pointing that out.
