Thomas Browne, son of Thomas Browne and Mary McKee, Island Magee
« on: Wednesday 08 June 16 21:16 BST (UK) »
I am trying to connect my great grandfather, Thomas Browne, with his parents and need to make sure I find the right Thomas Browne.  We are coming to Ireland June 26 from Georgia.
Thomas Browne, born June 14, 1871, Ballycarry, Antrim, Ireland, came to New York in 1898 with his brother, David Allen (born June 1 1878) as a linen merchant.  Thomas lived in Massapequa, Long Island, New York with his wife, Phoebe Breene Browne and 3 children, Thomas Allen, Dorothy, and Alice.  David Allen Browne went to Philadelphia and married Violetta Allen Browne.
Their parents were Thomas and Mary (thought to be Mary McKee), farmers on Island Magee.  I have a picture of Loughford House, where Thomas, my great grandfather, was supposedly born.  I have found lots of information that could be correct, but can find nothing definite to connect Thomas and David Allen Browne to the right parents, Thomas and Mary Browne.  I believe they had a sister, Agnes, who never married.

I do have that birth date as well...I believe that might have been when the birth was recorded(?) or the christening date.  On his passport in 1921 when he took by grandmother to visit relatives he listed his birthdate as 6/14/1871.  That passport was transcribed by someone incorrectly and actually says he was from Los Antonio, Ireland...the only way I found it was that I thought it was an awfully strange place name for Ireland, so I pulled it straight from the passport bureau...and it says Co Antrim.
I'm not sure that that marriage is the right one...it could be....but there is another in 1857 of Thomas Browne and Mary McKee.

GRONI (General Register Office of N.I.) has the birth as 21 June 1871. The actual certificate will show both the date of birth and date of registration. Date of baptism (if any) will be in a church record not the birth certificate.

That marriage is in Saintfield, co. Down which is quite a distance from Islandmagee.

Will have a look through some other records to see if we can confirm details about your Browne family.

I found a Thomas Browne born 1834 married 1857 to Mary McKee born 1835 in Carrikfergus.  I also found a will for Thomas Browne, Loughford House, leaving estate to son William, with executor son Samuel, mentioning son Robert, daughter Jinney and grandchildren.  No mention of Thomas or David Allen, however, they came to the US in 1898 and he died in 1906.  My great grandfather went back with his wife and 2 small children in 1907 to visit. I just can't find the definitive clue to match everyone up!
On Griffith's I found that Robert Browne had a farm on Lough Road or Drive and Samuel Browne had a piece nearby as well.  I just don't want to make the wrong connection, though.
My grandmother said that he father, Thomas Browne, was born at Loughford House and I have a picture.
Thanks so, so much for helping me!!
