I appreciate that the last message in this trail was nearly 9 years ago but on the off-chance that those involved are still active I thought I would ask a related question. My Great Great Grandmother was Mary Allen, the cousin of David Allen Browne. Her brother was George Allen who emigrated to Philadelphia, USA, and made his money through a millinery business. I read in an online article https://www.kophistory.org/namesake-of-allendale-road/ that George had initially joined his uncle in the USA, and in a separate article (which I can't find at the moment) that his cousin David Allen Browne had gone out to work for George. This doesn't quite fit with some of the information in earlier messages in this trail. Does anyone know the full story?

Hello there!
I believe you are connected to the Browne family in Islandmagee.  My father, Captain Robert Morton Browne did visit his uncle, David Browne and his family in Philadelphia in the 1930’s and possibly during WW2.  My dad was a merchant convoy Captain on the trans Atlantic route during the war.  I don’t remember a George Browne, but I believe we are related.  My dad’s father was one of 7 (8 - one died infancy) from Islandmagee on the farm at Loughford.  My grandfather, was also a sea-captain as many Islandmagee men took up that noble profession!  Unfortunately my grandfather’s ship was sunk by an enemy submarine in 1915.  My grandmother wasn’t connected to the Islandmagee family very much after he was killed.  David Browne left as a young man to seek his fortune as a linen merchant, I believe and I did read somewhere that he was encouraged by his uncle George in the US.  That is all I can add. I hope this helps.  Best wishes to you from Canada!

Many thanks for the quick reply and nice to be in contact with another cousin (third cousin, twice-removed I think). The George I refer to is George Allen - the Allens were cousins of the Brownes although George was over 30 years older than David Browne so perhaps that's a reason why he might use the title of uncle for George.

I have many sea captains in my Islandmagee family as well. My Gx2 Grandmother, Mary Allen, married into the Duffs, a great seafaring family. Mary's husband, William Duff, was drowned at sea in India and buried in what is now Myanmar. I still visit Islandmagee regularly as my parents live close by in Carrickfergus.

Hi,
It is so nice to hear from you. My dad grew up with Bob and Raymond (Peggy) Duff.  Although I think Raymond was a bit younger than my dad.
I wonder if you knew them?
Carrickfergus is so beautiful!
Liz

Hi Liz - I didn't know any of the family that had the Duff surname, apart from my grandmother. She was Mary Allen Duff - she was an only child and as far as I know there were no male cousins to pass on the Duff surname. But I'm sure there is a connection if you go back far enough - Islandmagee is a small place. David

Hey!  My great grandfather, Thomas Browne, also the brother of John Nelson Browne (Liz from above grandfather), came to America with his brother David Allen Browne.  David came to Philadelphia and worked at George Allen’s millinery store in Philadelphia, my great grandfather went to Long Island NY as an Irish linen merchant.  I do know the full story and have lots of documentation on the website that I do.  I believe that your George Allen was the first who came here and started the store… short version is that he married, had no children, but raised a niece (his wife’s niece).  He eventually had his nephew George Allen come from Ireland to take over the store.  He eventually was declared incompetent (probably dementia in our world) and his nephew George Allen became the millionaire businessman.  I have tons more about him but the genealogy is that the original George Allen’s sister, Isabella Allen Browne, was married to my great grandfather’s uncle, John Browne.  Consequently, the nephew who took over, George Allen, was the son of John and Isabella and brother of Mary Allen Duff!  David Allen Browne married Violetta Allen, daughter of David Allen, George’s brother.
My grandmother, Dorothy Browne Ryerson, Liz’s dad, Robert Browne, and David Allen Browne, Jr.  were cousins. My family tree (which I have Mary on) says she is my 1st cousin 3 times removed - still family!!!  Here is my email address - I would love for you to email me and we can make some connections - I can tell you lots more and let you go on the family website I do!
